Mother's Day Brunch North Fork Style
Why can’t Mother’s Day be celebrated every weekend? Moms play taxi every day schlepping their darling kiddies to and from school, soccer practice (and the dreaded ‘away games’ on Randalls Island with the NYC skyline in view), violin lessons, orthodontist appointments and the list goes on (and on, and on…). There is no day off from the 24/7 job of being a mom and as such there should be at least a weekly ritual of appreciating mom. As this concept, sadly, does not exist as a regular weekly holiday, the notion of treating a dedicated mom to a lovely brunch on Mother’s Day seems the least a loving family can offer. With Dan’s Papers Best of the Best as a guide, here are our top picks of where to pamper mom with a champagne cocktail this weekend on the North Fork.
Set atop the scenic Long Island Sound, Soundview Restaurant in Greenport, Platinum Best of the Best winner last year, offers a view unlike any other on this list. The savory brunch menu includes a Salmon BLT, marinated steak and eggs, and Eggs Benedict. We hear there might be one or two window seats available.
Amano Osteria in Mattituck, Gold Best of the Best winner last year, would be a delightful spot to take mom especially if you can nab a table on the patio. Fresh buffalo mozzarella with roasted tomatoes make for a savory breakfast pizza while a little yellow fin tuna tartare “Putanesca” might be for the more adventurous palates. The “aMano Benedict” plays off the traditional with the addition of soft polenta and prosciutto. Bar specials include $5 Bloody Marys, Screwdrivers, Mimosas and house wine all afternoon. Cheers!
Head to Calverton to enjoy an over-the-top gastronomic display at Giorgio’s Restaurant & Caterers, the Dan’s Papers Best of the Best Silver winner last year. Overlooking a rolling golf course guests can enjoy a walk through the gardens, pose for selfies (or #mommies in honor of Mother’s Day) by the waterfall, and above all enjoy a brunch buffet with nearly 100 options. Start with omelets made-to-order or sweet blueberry blintzes then head over to the raw bar for shrimp and oysters. Carving and pasta stations will get the adults attention while the kiddies can focus on the well laden tables that comprise the dessert station.
Looking for something a bit more low-key and homespun but equally delicious? Head over to Love Lane Kitchen in Mattituck, Best of the Best Bronze Award winner last year, for lemon ricotta pancakes so light and fluffy one plate might not be enough. Other notable options include pastrami hash and eggs, Rancheros style fried eggs with refried beans served with flour tortillas, and breakfast potatoes so good you’ll ask for seconds.
