Time To Pour: Vineyards & Wineries In The Hamptons And North Fork Take Top Honors
Long Island Wine Country is an expansive collection of over 3,000 acres of grapes in the Hamptons and North Fork. The region is ripe with over 60 vineyards and wineries producing over 500,000 cases of wine each year. We sipped our way through the chardonnay and swirled a bit of merlot looking for “good legs” as the Dan’s Papers Best of the Best vineyard and wineries votes were tallied.
#DansBOTB voters made it very clear that when it comes to rose they think Macari Vineyards (150 Bergen Avenue, Mattituck NY, 631-298-0100, macariwines.com) is in the pink. A blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Pinot Noir this is a fresh and fruity summer favorite.
Wolffer Estate (139 Sagg Road, Sagaponack NY, 631-537-5106, wolffer.com), took home many Best of the Best Awards in the vineyard categories. Among the many accolades our readers agree that Wolffer has the Best Chardonnay, Best Merlot, Best Vineyard Scenery, and the Best Winemaker with Roman Roth.
It’s all about the bubbles for Sparkling Pointe (39750 County Road 48, Southold NY, 631-765-0200, sparklingpointe.com) who took home top honors for Best Tasting Room, Best Tour, and Best Winery. Generous grounds and patios offer guests an idyllic setting to raise a glass and toast anything from a bridal shower to a rose colored sunset.
Raphael Vineyards (39390 Route 25, Peconic NY, 631-765-1100, raphaelwine.com) was voted Best Tasting Room Store. The sprawling Italianate estate offers guests the feeling of being in Italy without the plane trip and a wide selection of glassware and accessories all hand-crafted to perfection just like their wines.
Voted Best Wine Club, Sannino Bella Vita Vineyard (13750 Mill Road, Peconic NY, 631-734-8282, sanninovineyard.com) offers a Vine to Wine Program that focuses on each step of the winemaking process complete with tours, tastings, and the creation of a custom wine label.
Lenz Winery (38355 Route 25, Peconic NY, 631-734-6010, lenzwine.com) keeps it hands-on especially when crafting their award-winning Cabernet. They micro-manage every leaf and cultivate each grape to produce their Cab rich with black cherries, a tang of red currant, and a very smooth finish.
