Treat Your Pets to the Best in the Hamptons + North Fork

As we sit on the cusp of summer and all that it brings, it’s time to look at the top dogs in our various Dan’s Best of the Best categories from the Hamptons and North Fork.
While we’re talking top dogs, the Pets category is full of great human beings, organizations and businesses dedicated to our local dogs and cats.
Our region’s Best of the Best volunteers for pet rescue and the shelters that care for those wayward, four-legged souls should be recognized for their great service.
L.I. Kitties in Speonk is so beloved by East Enders, it earned the Platinum distinction on the North Fork and South Fork lists. The nonprofit org is a no-kill group dedicated to rescue and placement of homeless or stray cats and kittens. They foster and socialize (when needed) cats, care for their veterinary needs, and then place them in loving homes—and they do it with no federal or state assistance. Call 631-987-8152, email info@likitties.com or visit likitties.com to make an appointment and meet available cats.
Separate from rescue groups, Southampton Animal Shelter (102 Old Riverhead Road West) in Hampton Bays, was voted Platinum for best South Fork animal shelter. This haven for homeless pets not only houses animals from all over Long Island, they also rescue dogs from kill shelters and puppy mills around the country. Our North Fork voted the North Fork Animal Welfare League (269 Peconic Lane) in Peconic as their Platinum shelter. This shelter locates owners of lost pets, finds homes for homeless pets and provides shelter, food, grooming, exercise and medical treatment to all their residents. For dogs that just need some good care while owners are away, the South Fork chose Comfy Critters Pet & Home Sitting (229-101 W Montauk Highway, 631-903-4918, comfycrittersphs.com) in Hampton Bays as their Platinum pet-sitter, while North Forkers elevated Donna Goldense to the top spot.
