The New York Times Commutes with Keith Hernandez
Former New York Mets first basemen and current announcer Keith Hernandez recently invited The New York Times to join him on his commute from his Sag Harbor home to Citi Field in his Mercedes-Benz.
Times writer Michael Powell spent some time at Hernandez’s place before the 86-mile car ride, passing the time chatting about how statisticians have changed baseball, how well the Mets are playing this season, the time Hernandez met Richard Nixon, and Hernandez’s Sag Harbor haunts Cappelletti and The American Hotel.
After riding shotgun, Powell follows Hernandez through the employee-only areas of Citi Field to the broadcast booth.
