Super Bowl 50 Is Really All About NY and the Hamptons
Before I reveal my prediction of who will be the winner of Super Bowl 50 (L for Romans), which is to be played on Sunday February 7, 2016 at the Levi’s Stadium in the City of Santa Clara, California, there are a few things you should know.
In contrast to the Giants or Jets—which both play in East Rutherford, New Jersey—the Carolina Panthers home in Charlotte, North Carolina is 722.5 miles from Southampton, New York. Denver Colorado and the Denver Broncos are even farther at 1,868.8 miles. With these distances it would seem that New York and the Hamptons would have very little in common with this year’s event. However, nothing could be further from reality.
This year’s halftime show is known as the Pepsi Super Bowl 50 Halftime Show. Guess where the headquarters for PepsiCo Inc. is located? That’s right, it’s in Purchase, New York.
Lady Gaga will sing the National Anthem at Super Bowl 50. Gaga was born Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta at Lennox Hill Hospital in Manhattan. She has visited the Hamptons on numerous occasions, including shopping on Main Street in East Hampton, eating dinner at Jerry and The Mermaid in Riverhead and checking out the artful excitement at the Watermill Center.
Now let’s move to halftime. The frontman for Coldplay, Chris Martin, will lead the charge. Chris and his consciously uncoupled other half Gwyneth Paltrow have had a house in Amagansett for some time. Chris, even post-divorce announcement, was classy enough to attend the screening of Hector And The Search For Happiness in East Hampton in 2014, which was also attended by his mother-in-law Blythe Danner.
Beyoncé will also appear at halftime. Everyone on the East End is aware that Beyoncé and superstar husband Jay-Z have spent considerable time in the Hamptons. She was spotted out and about town, accompanied by her husband and daughter Blue Ivy, as recently as last June.
If this wasn’t enough, let’s not forget that the quarterback for the Broncos, Peyton Manning is the older brother of our very own two-time Super Bowl-winning (XLII and XLVI) New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning, who, by the way, has also visited the Hamptons.
Were you aware that many of the Super Bowl commercials were created by New York Advertising Agencies? Or that the game is being broadcast on CBS, which has their headquarters in New York City, and that many of their executives vacation or have second homes in the Hamptons?
Did you also know that our very own Amagansett resident Alec Baldwin is starring in Super Bowl commercials for Amazon?
I could go on and on.
Honestly, I really think they should rename this event New York Super Bowl 50, or maybe Super Bowl NY. Don’t you agree?
Now, since you’ve waited for it…
My Super Bowl 50 Prediction: The underdog Denver Broncos will win due to the experience of Manning and an unbelievable defense. In case you are wondering about my sports betting credentials—I have successfully picked five of the last 10 Super Bowl winners.
