Steven Spielberg Screens 'The BFG' at Cannes Film Festival
East Hampton’s Steven Spielberg recently premiered his latest film, The BFG, at Cannes Film Festival. Based on the book by Roald Dahl, the film tells the story about a young girl who meets a Giant who takes her on an adventure to Giant Country. The BFG will open in theaters nationwide on July 1. Dahl, who passed away in 1990, would be turning 100 this year.
Early reviews out of Cannes have been somewhat lukewarm, with many praising the film’s dazzling special effects but criticizing its lack of sharp humor, something Dahl was known for. The BFG stars Mark Rylance, Penelope Wilton, Jemaine Clement, Rebecca Hall, Rafe Spall, Bill Hader and Ruby Barnhill.
Spielberg will next direct Ready Player One, based on the book by Ernest Cline, for a 2018 release. He is also set to direct the next Indiana Jones film, to be released in 2019.
