It’s true. The self-indulgent and awkward phenomenon in which people take photos of themselves now has its own holiday on June 21. But don’t write selfies off as just some trend that millennials created—the word (and practice) is officially recognized in both the Oxford and Merriam-Webster dictionaries.

Merriam-Webster‘s definition:

noun | self·ie | \ˈsel-fē\ : an image of oneself taken by oneself using a digital camera especially for posting on social networks
