Montauk Salt Cave: The Mind, Body and Spirit Cleanse
The Montauk Salt Cave, constructed of pink Himalayan salt, is rest, relaxation and healing at its finest. Owner Shannon Coppola dishes about the benefits of having a treatment at the cave.
What was the inspiration for the Montauk Salt Cave?
My son. He had severe respiratory issues. We tried all different doctors, and then I was told by a friend to try salt therapy. We went to a salt room in New Jersey, and after the treatment, at 4½ years old, my son slept through the night for the first time. The salt room cleared up all the respiratory issues he was having, and so I decided to create one.
What do guests love the most about the Montauk Salt Cave?
They always feel so good when they leave. That’s what makes them keep coming back.
What are some benefits of Salt Therapy?
It’s super helpful in terms of upping your magnesium levels. You’ll find that most of us are deficient in magnesium. You’re surrounded by the salt from the cave walls, but a machine also pumps salt air into the room. Salt therapy helps with arthritis and migraines. Whatever your body needs, the salt is going to take care of it.
What are some events you host at the Salt Cave?
We offer transformational breath work. The deep breathing releases toxins, which opens up everything else. We also have Reiki, massage, yoga and singing bowls.
You also have special “Kids Sessions” at the salt cave. What do kids think of the Salt Cave?
It’s funny because they enjoy it, but then they don’t come back because whatever was bothering them is solved. One child had a snoring problem, and then didn’t come back because exposure to the salt actually helped stop the snoring.
Can you say more about the therapeutic yoga you offer?
Yes. We offer Restorative and Kundalini Yoga. Restorative Yoga is so easy. You lie down, mold the salt to your body, and stretch. Kundalini Yoga cleanses your brain, as silly as that may sound. You’re in the cave for 75 minutes, and you’re to breathe fast and move your body as you’re sitting. You’re also taught how to breathe correctly, which many of us don’t do.
What can guests expect to experience when they visit your salt cave?
Relaxation. Your sinuses will open within 15 minutes. You’ll feel really good, and the room is super pretty.
What are some of the funniest thing that have happened in your salt cave?
Oh, so many! One thing is people ask if they can go in naked. I usually tell them that they might get cold.
