Cynthia Nixon Stars in Bill O'Reilly's 'Killing Reagan' Sunday
Montauk homeowner Cynthia Nixon stars as Nancy Reagan in Killing Reagan, the National Geographic Channel film based on fellow Montauker Bill O’Reilly‘s 2015 book (with Martin Dugard), on Sunday, October 16 at 8 p.m.
The film, and O’Reilly’s book, explores John Hinckley Jr.‘s 1981 assassination attempt on then President Ronald Reagan. If the film is anything like the book, Killing Reagan will chronicle Reagan’s career and rise to power, along with his relationship with wife Nancy. At the same time, it will look at Hinckley’s descent into the madness that drove him to shoot Reagan just two months into his presidency.
The assassination attempt left Reagan wounded with a .22 caliber bullet just inches from his heart, and injured press secretary James Brady, a secret service agent and a police officer. Hinckley did it because of his obsession with actress Jodi Foster and the Martin Scorsese film Taxi Driver in which Robert DeNiro‘s character, Travis Bickle, attempts to kill the president. Foster played Iris, a 12-year-old prostitute, in Taxi Driver.
Nixon stars alongside Tim Matheson as Reagan, Joe Chrest as secret service agent Jerry Parr, Kyle S. More as Hinckley, Joel Murray as Ed Meese and Michael H. Cole as Brady.
O’Reilly’s other books in the “Killing” series include Killing Lincoln, Killing Kennedy, Killing Jesus, and Killing Patton.
Killing Reagan is Nixon’s second time playing a first lady. She played Eleanor Roosevelt in the 2005 HBO film Warm Spring.
