Jennifer Lopez to Star in NBC's 'Bye Bye Birdie Live!' in 2017
We love you J-Lo, oh yes we do!
Water Mill’s Jennifer Lopez, who is starring on crooked cop drama Shades of Blue, producing and appearing as a judge on World of Dance and performing a residency at Las Vegas’ Planet Hollywood, has taken on yet another new gig. The iconic mega-celeb will star in NBC’s 2017 production of Bye Bye Birdie Live! as Rosie, the female lead. The role was played by Chita Rivera on Broadway in 1961.
Bye Bye Birdie is a musical comedy about harried music industry manager Albert Peterson and his girlfriend and secretary Rose Alvarez, who are trying to both promote and curb the wild behavior of their star talent, Conrad Birdie, who has been drafted to the army. Albert and Rosie arrange for Birdie to give “One Last Kiss” to superfan Kim on The Ed Sullivan Show, but along the way must deal with crazed teenagers, Albert’s overbearing mother, Birdie’s unpredictable antics and Rosie’s desire for Albert to leave the biz and marry her.
NBC has found great success with their annual live musicals, with Sound of Music Live, Peter Pan Live and The Wiz Live all being ratings hits despite being met with lukewarm critical reception. This year’s musical, Hairspray Live, features the talents of Jennifer Hudson, Sean Hayes, Kristin Chenoweth and other Broadway talent. Hairspray Live airs on December 7.
Lopez is the only cast member announced so far, but Harvey Fierstein will be writing the adaptation. Shades of Blue returns in 2017 for a 13-episode second season, and World of Dance will premiere next year, as well.
