Leonardo DiCaprio Producing 'Captain Planet' Film Adaptation
Here’s some news that will incite both raised eyebrows and feelings of nostalgia.
Hamptons regular Leonardo DiCaprio’s production company Appian Way is reportedly developing a film based on the 1990s children’s television show Captain Planet and the Planeteers. A cartoon with a message, Captain Planet was the story of five kids who wore magical rings that, when combined, summoned Captain Planet, a superhero who fought against pollution and other environmental threats. The original series ran from 1990–1992, then from 1993–1996. Appian Way will be working with Paramount on the adaptation.
The film is being written by Glenn Powell (who currently stars on Scream Queens) and Jono Matt and is a decidedly different take on the musclebound blue hero. The film will apparently focus on an older, beaten down Captain Planet, who has failed to save the environment. Determined to make things right, he decides to track down the five kids, now all grown up, to save the world.
Nope, we’re not kidding.
We’re not sure if this is meant to be a parody or comedic take on the overly earnest source material, but either way, DiCaprio developing a film based on a relatively obscure property like Captain Planet is fascinating. Maybe next he could adapt Super Samurai Cyber Squad…
