2019 Southampton Village Beach Guide

The Village of Southampton is home to a number of beaches. Coopers Beach is the area’s main beach and the only one in the with lifeguards. Please note that Southampton Town parking passes are not valid at Southampton Village beaches and vice versa.

Southampton Village property owners and year-round renters may receive their free parking permit at Village Hall or by mail, up to three vehicles per household. Those who choose to apply from home must mail a copy of their valid car registration, current tax bill, telephone number and a self-addressed, stamped envelope to Village Hall, Attention: Beach Permits, 23 Main Street, Southampton, NY 11968 (renters must also include two original utility bills).

Local non-Village residents who reside within the Southampton Fire or School Districts can obtain a permit for $250 per car by mailing the same paperwork as Village renters, with the addition of the check made out to the Village of Southampton. Seniors and veterans only pay $175 per car.

Summer tourists only need a copy of a valid car registration, telephone number, $450 check to the Village and a self-addressed, stamped envelope (if mailing). The senior discount isn’t available to non-locals.

Dogs are allowed at most Southampton Village beaches, but must remain leashed. Doggie bags are provided at beach entrances, and those who don’t pick up after their pet will incur a $250 fine.

Driving on the beach is allowed after 6 p.m. with a 4×4 permit from both Southampton Village (free) and Southampton Town ($20). No parking allowed on any beach or in any parking lot from 1–5 a.m. Bonfires are allowed at some beaches with a $25 permit from Village Hall.

Fowler Beach
Location: Ocean beach, End of Fowler Street

Inside scoop: Stop by Fowlers farm stand on the way home from Fowlers Beach to pick up ingredients for the evening’s dinner.

Old Town Beach
Location: Ocean beach, End of Old Town Road

Inside scoop: Once on the beach, Old Town is best recognized by the tall wooden pole with an old, colorful surfboard nailed to it. The landmark makes Old Town Beach and Coopers Beach the only two village beaches whose entrances don’t fade into the dunes, perfect landmarks if you’re interested in running on the sand—the stretch between Old Town and Coopers is two miles. Old Town Beach is closed when the drain pipe, which cleans out nearby Old Town Pond, is open.

Wyandanch Beach
Location: Ocean beach, End of Wyandanch Lane

Inside scoop: Wyandanch Lane, leading up to the beach, is the most beautiful in the village. If you’re biking to the beach, incorporate the stretch into your route. Large oak trees canopy the entire road, filtering the sunlight through their leaves and providing warm shade during summer’s hottest days.

Little Plains Beach
Location: Ocean beach, 543 Little Plains Road
Parking: $450 Village Permit required during open hours

Inside scoop: If you want to look at the beach from the comfort of your car, Little Plains allows you to pull up to the entrance and just sit in one of the lot’s 54 spaces. Make sure to turn your engine off; it’s a no idle zone.

Gin Lane Beach
Location: Ocean beach, 121 Gin Lane
Parking: $450 Village Permit required during open hours, an Agawam permit from Southampton Town is required to park in the spaces around the lake, to the north of the median

Inside scoop: You’re in luck if you’re a nonlocal and can snag one of the permit-free spots facing the Bathing Corp. Gin beach notoriously has one of the best surfing breaks in the village. But, when in the water, be wary of running into the string of buoys that the Bathing Corp puts up to designate its lifeguarded section. Also, don’t swim when nearby Agawam Lake is being drained. Just…trust us on that one.

Cryder Beach
Location: Ocean beach, 98 Cryder Lane
Parking: $450 Village Permit required during open hours
Amenities: Trash can

Inside scoop: Cryder’s entrance makes it a Hamptons favorite. Walking up the dune, you’re flanked by beach roses (Rosa rugosa) on both sides. The short walk soon gives way to a clean and surprisingly wide expanse of ocean and sand.

Coopers Beach
Location: Ocean beach, 268 Meadow Lane
Parking: $450 Village Permit required during open hours, $50 daily permits available
Amenities: Lifeguard (10 a.m.–5 p.m.), concessions, $10 chair rentals, $15 umbrella rentals, restroom, shower, picnic table, trash can, bike rack
Restrictions During Open Hours (9:30 a.m.–5 p.m.): No entering vehicle ramp
Restrictions at All Times: No dogs, no alcohol, no bonfires, no beach driving, no watercrafts, no fishing, no camping
Inside scoop: Coopers was rated Dr. Beach’s Best Beach in America in 2010, the first beach in New York State to receive the honor. As per Dr. Beach’s rules, once a beach is ranked No. 1, it is no longer eligible to grace his annual Top 10 Beaches list. But, with its wide expanse of sand, family-friendly beach pavilion, and multitude of events held throughout the summer (including concerts and drive-in movie Mondays), Coopers would still trump the competition. By far the largest beach in Southampton Village, Coopers is also the only beach in the village that allows non-residents to purchase day permits.

Halsey Neck Beach
Location: Ocean beach, End of Halsey Neck Lane
Parking: $450 Village Permit required during open hours
Amenities: Trash can, restroom
Restrictions During Open Hours (9 a.m.–6 p.m.): No fishing
Restrictions at All Times: No alcohol, no camping, no watercrafts, no beach driving
Inside scoop: A popular spot to take photos, since it doesn’t get as crowded as the larger beaches.

Dune Beach
Location: Ocean beach, 1678 Meadow Lane
Parking: Resident parking only, but permits still required during open hours.
Amenities: Restroom, trash can
Restrictions During Open Hours (9 a.m.–6 p.m.): No beach driving, no fishing
Restrictions at All Times: No alcohol, no bonfires, no watercrafts
Inside scoop: Come to this beach to complain about that idiot from New Jersey who cut you off while making a left or the Florida grandma who almost mowed you down as you crossed Main Street against the light.

Road D
Location: Ocean beach, End of Road D
Parking: Free parking, no permit required.
Amenities: Trash can, restroom
Restrictions During Open Hours (9 a.m.–6 p.m.): No beach driving, no fishing
Restrictions at All Times: No alcohol, no bonfires, no camping, no watercrafts
Inside scoop: Though this is the only beach in the Village that does not require a permit to park, it’s located far enough west along Meadow Lane that it doesn’t get as crowded as you’d expect.

Road F
Location: Ocean beach, End of Road F
Parking: $450 Village Permit required during open hours
Amenities: None
Restrictions During Open Hours (9 a.m.–6 p.m.): No beach driving, no fishing
Restrictions at All Times: No alcohol, no bonfires, no camping, no watercrafts
Inside scoop: It’s a little more private than most Southampton Town beaches.

Road G
Location: Ocean beach, End of Road G
Parking: $450 Village Permit required during open hours
Amenities: Trash can
Restrictions During Open Hours (9 a.m.–6 p.m.): No fishing, no watercrafts
Restrictions at All Times: No alcohol, no bonfires, no camping
Inside scoop: Road G is a known surfing spot, due to both the break and the ease of transporting your board onto the sand via car.
