Boys Lacrosse Team Levels Off

The South Fork Islanders leveled off after a hot start this season. East Hampton, Bridgehampton, and Pierson formed the conglomerate because the local schools, taken individually, did not have enough players to field a team.

It proved to be a rousing success, as the locals broke smartly out of the gate before leveling off, losing five of their last six games. The season ended with two heartbreaking losses last week, a 15-13 affair at Hauppauge on May 8 and a 14-10 loss to Rocky Point at home three days later.

The Islanders couldn’t stop Teddy Accardi, who tallied seven points for Rocky Point. Brian Damm had four goals for the losers and Logan Gurne and Kai Parcher-Charles, two each. Cooper Brindle and Luke Marro also scored for the locals. Jimmy O’Brien recorded nine saves. Rocky Point finished the regular season with a 7-7 record.

Against Hauppauge Connor Rozzi scored five times, and Damm and Marro two each. Jameson Willey contributed two assists. Brindle made 10 saves. Sean Finneran recorded 17 saves for the winners, who finished the regular season with a 7-7 mark.

Playoff Schedule
Riverhead (the 10th seed in Class A) played at Bayshore (seventh seed) on May 15, and the winner will play the second seed, Smithtown West on Friday, May 18.

Westhampton finished its regular season with a 9-6 mark in Division II by edging Glenn 10-9 on the loser’s field. Dylan Laube scored with 9:28 remaining in the fourth quarter to give Westhampton a 10-8 lead and improve to 8-6 in Suffolk II. Laube finished with five goals and had two assists. Andrew Arcuri made 10 saves for Westhampton. Justin Tiernan had five goals and two assists for Glenn.

The Hurricanes finished with a flourish, winning four of five.

Laube is also the Suffolk County and Long Island Player of the year in football.

Mattituck/Southold, the only other East End boys lacrosse team to qualify for the postseason, will play Babylon on May 29 at Islip High School for the Suffolk County Class D title and a berth in the New York State playoffs.

The Tuckers went 10-6 in Division II, wrapping up the regular season by knocking off Bellport 12-4 on May 11. Dane Reda had two goals and four assists, Justin Tobin added two goals and three assists, and Max Kruszeski tallied three goals and one assist to lead the winners.

Kruszeski, incidentally, was fifth in Suffolk in scoring, with 61 goals and 22 assists.
