Dandelion Festival
It was a day filled with flower power as North Forkers and visitors alike celebrated at this year’s Dandelion Festival at KK’s Farm in Southold.
The community event was complete with flower crowns, hula hoops, and music by Points East (pictured) and Liza Coppola.
Guests enjoyed dandelion pizza provided by the Rolling in Dough pizza truck. There was dandelion coffee from NoFoRoCo, Dandelion wine from Macari Vineyard, and dandelion tacos by Grace and Grit.
The golden friend of the farm was also the topic of many lectures in the barn. Sarah Sheppard discussed dandelions as food and medicine, while Veronica Kalisi read “The Dandelion” by Vachel Lindsay. There were also birds from the Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Rescue Center, ready for a photo op.
The purpose of the event was to make guests aware of the benefits of the dandelion leaf, flower, and root. The dandelion is a symbol of spring, and early food for the bees and other pollinators. The festival urges community members to stop spraying harmful chemicals on them in order to reduce toxic chemicals entering our soil, aquifer, estuaries, and bays.
