Busted Under Leandra’s Law

A 26-year-old Calverton man was arrested under Leandra’s Law after he fled the scene of a car crash with four kids in tow in Lake Ronkonkoma early Sunday morning, Suffolk County Police said.
George Campbell was allegedly driving a 2004 Infiniti Q56 on Gatelot Avenue when he drove across the front lawns of two homes on School Street, then struck a parked, unoccupied 2018 Toyota and fled the scene at about 1:25 AM. A Fourth Precinct patrol officer observed Campbell driving the car with two flat tires and ordered him to pull over on Hawkins Avenue, police said.

Campbell’s girlfriend and her four children, a three-year-old and 16-year-old girl, as well as a seven-year-old and 10-year-old boy, were in the car at the time of the incident, however, they were not injured. The children were released into the custody of their mother.

Campbell was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated with a child passenger 15 years or younger, driving while ability impaired by drugs and/or alcohol, first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, leaving the scene of a motor vehicle crash, and four counts of endangering the welfare of a child.

Campbell was scheduled to be arraigned in First District Court in Central Islip on Monday.

Felony DWI Charge in Traffic Stop

A 24-year-old Shirley man stopped for traffic violations was hit with felony drunk driving charges last month, Southampton Village police said.

Adrain Gomez was driving a 2004 Nissan Sentra with a bogus New York State vehicle inspection sticker eastbound on County Road 39 just before 4 AM on April 29 when he was pulled over, according to police. Gomez, who did not have a valid driver’s license at the time of his arrest, also circumvented a vehicle interlock device, which would require him to record his breath before driving, and he was found with two vape pens and liquid marijuana, police said.

Gomez was also slapped with first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation, also a felony, and misdemeanor charges of circumventing an interlock device, seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, and possession of a fictitious state vehicle inspection sticker. He pleaded not guilty at his arraignment in village court and was released on $5000 bail, according to a court spokeswoman.

Pinched In Purse Snatch

A 37-year-old East Hampton woman was arrested last month for snatching two purses worth about $1500 from Perfect Purse Boutique in early April, Southampton Village police said.

Jennifer Russo is alleged to have stolen the two purses on April 13 and was charged with fourth-degree grand larceny, a felony, on April 19. She pleaded not guilty and was processed and released after posting $500 station house bail. She was due to appear back in court on May 15.

DWI Charge In Speeding Stop

A 31-year-old Center Moriches man was stopped for speeding on County Road 80 in Hampton Bays and ended up being arrested for aggravated driving while intoxicated on May 13, New York State Police said.

Louis Boch Carrillo was pulled over just after 1 AM and provided a breath sample exhibiting a blood alcohol level of .19 percent, according to police. He was released and was issued traffic tickets returnable to Southampton Town Justice Court on May 21.
