The Lin Beach House, ‘This Must Be The Place’
Play, sip, and stay at The Lin Beach House, breathing new life into Greenport. For seven years the Victorian building, formerly known as The Shady Lady, located at 455 NY-25 and next door to Kontokosta Winery, stood vacant, but has now reopened as a boutique, five luxury room hotel for guests 21 and over.
Leslie Merinoff Kwasnieki and her husband, Brian Kwasnieki, found the house when seeking a place to stay while working on sister company, Matchbook Distilling Co., down the road. Together with their team, Andrew Merinoff, Josh Duffy, Nancy Cameron Duffy, and Paul Monahan, they have restored the Shady Lady. Paul Monahan, Hospitality Director, formerly worked with Leslie for a global spirits supplier in New York City. His background in hospitality dates to his years working for Morgans Hotel Group, accrediting its design team as an influence for the creative concepts at The Lin Beach House, along with travel escapes “to the likes of Bali, Scandinavia, and Cape Town.”
“All of us fell in love with Greenport and the North Fork. The backdrop of the environment is stunning and speaks to all of our passions for agriculture and anthropology. We all love the idea of a dreamy beach escape — and we have designed all of the spaces within our walls of The Lin Beach House to speak to those emotions,” said Monahan.
Each of the individual five doors opens to rooms with lofty, 17-foot ceilings and oversized windows overlooking the surrounding natural beauty — a few even include a balcony area. Guests will lose themselves in a king bed surrounded by white walls and an en suite bathroom with fixtures paying homage to the Lady that once was, such as classically designed crowfoot tubs. Televisions will be noticeably absent not only from the rooms but the bar area, Days Like These, encouraging a community driven atmosphere.
Days Like These will be open Tuesdays through Saturdays, 5 PM to midnight, serving a local cocktail menu that will rotate daily, in addition to local wines and its own signature beer created through a collaboration with Greenport Harbor Brewing Company. With “big brother” Matchbook Distilling Co. set to open June 1, the bar will showcase hand crafted spirits made a short distance away and have an official tasting room in what once was a wine cellar. The tasting room will be open Fridays and Saturdays, from 12 to 6 PM, allowing hotel guests and day visitors alike to sip, savor, explore, and purchase the distillery’s libations.
Across the hall from Days Like These is a south facing lounge surrounded by windows, idyllic for morning coffee, reading, working, or escaping life’s everyday stressors. The Lin Beach House places a special emphasis on drink and design, with no regular operations in the kitchen area. However, there are plans for monthly pop up programs and weekend chef takeovers, offering bar guests spontaneous, bite-sized fare.
“This must be the place,” denotes its tagline, where restored, Victorian history meets a luxurious, playful escape.
“We all marvel in old stories of people who have had amazing experiences in this building’s previous lives,” said Monahan. “We enjoy traditions and the history of everything that is Greenport. We can’t wait to meet people and have them share their stories of memorable laughs in these walls.”
Rooms start at $250 during the week and will go up to $550 on the weekends during the high season. Guests can reserve their rooms now at www.thelinbeachhouse.com.
