Whalers Are Human After All

In the end, the Pierson/Bridgehampton boys’ baseball team flirted with immortality, and that will have to do.

The Mercy Monarchs are on a mission. The school is set to close, and there is a sense of urgency that pervades the hallowed halls of the Riverhead landmark.

Mercy took two of three against Pierson, knocking the locals from the ranks of the unbeaten but also sending a not too subtle message: we’ll see you in the Suffolk County Class C playoffs.

Playing at home Thursday, the Monarchs took away most of the drama early on, breaking out in front with a first inning run, building a 4-0 lead after four and enjoying a 9-0 bulge after six. The finale was 9-4. Phil Marino’s three-run dinger in the sixth proved the final nail in the coffin.

Mercy prevailed in a 2-1 thriller in Sag Harbor Saturday. The two teams finished regulation and were tied 1-1 in the ninth when Sean Hinck drove in Christian Doroski with a fielder’s choice RBI.

That proved to be the game winning.

The Whalers salvaged Monday’s finale, winning 6-3 at Mashashimuet Park behind their ace, Sam Warne.

Shed no tears for Pierson-the locals have clinched the League IX title with a sterling 13-2 mark; Mercy, 8-5, moved into second.

The Whalers play Stony Brook on May 2 upisland and get The Bears at home the next day. First pitch is 4:30 PM.

Mercy is at Greenport May 2 and gets the Clippers at home the next day.

BTW Jem Sisco of Southampton is second in county with four dingers; Warne has six wins, tied for the top spot, and Joe Marti of Mercy has five.
