Charlton Makes History

Jemille Charlton was appointed the new Master for the Free and Accepted Masons of the Grand Lodge of New York on May 17. Charlton now heads Lodge number 437, Sag Harbor’s Wamponamon.

The Freemasonry organization is composed of several lodges that trace their lineage back to the 14th Century stonemasons. America is founded on the ideals of the Freemasonry — George Washington and Benjamin Franklin were Masonic members.

The Sag Harbor Masonic Lodge holds a 165-year history in the area and Charlton is the first African-American to hold this position in the lodge’s history. In addition to his role in the Masonic Lodge, Charlton remains an active duty serviceman for the New York division of the Air National Guard and holds the rank of technical sergeant.
