Man Rescued From Shinnecock Inlet
A 74-year-old Hampton Bays man was rescued after his Boston Whaler overturned in Shinnecock Inlet in Hampton Bays Wednesday morning.
Southampton Town police said they received a 911 call at about 8:11 AM alerting them to a man overboard near the inlet. When bay constables arrived, they found George Tollefsen holding on to the bow rail of the 15-foot vessel, according to police. He had been wearing his life vest, but was alone on the boat and was forced into the water when it overturned, police said.
Tollessen was exhausted and was taken to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital for treatment, police said.
The vessel, which could not be recovered due to rough sea conditions, remained in the water near the inlet, police said. The United States Coast Guard has issued a warning to mariners — through VHF Channel 16 — alerting them to the location to avoid the potential danger of collisions.
