New Hospital Gains Gubernatorial OK

On December 21, Governor Andrew Cuomo signed a bill allowing Stony Brook Southampton Hospital to finally begin putting in place all the pieces for its relocation to Stony Brook Southampton campus in the Shinnecock Hills.

“Passage of this legislation is a significant milestone and advances Stony Brook’s mission to reshape the healthcare landscape on the East End of Long Island,” Robert Chaloner, chief administrative officer for Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, said in a statement. “It could not have happened without the vision and tireless efforts of our ardent champions in the New York State Legislature, Senator Kenneth LaValle and Assemblyman Fred Thiele. We are grateful for their support of this project and look forward to working with our community and realizing many more milestones that are to come.”

“In 2017, Southampton Hospital and Stony Brook University Hospital entered into an agreement that made Southampton Hospital part of the Stony Brook University Health Care System,” said Thiele.

“The agreement is bringing improved health care to the East End. An integral part of that agreement was the provision of land at the Southampton campus of Stony Brook University for the construction of a new state-of-the-art hospital. Special state legislation was needed to authorize the land lease,” he continued.

“I am pleased to report that in December, the governor gave final approval to this legislation sponsored by Senator LaValle and myself. The construction of the new facility will be paid for with private dollars raised in the community. The new hospital will not only provide state-of-the-art health care facilities, it will also be a catalyst for the continued educational renaissance on the Southampton campus. The campus now has an enrollment of over 600 students in the marine sciences, fine arts, and health sciences. With the construction of the hospital, an expanded and enhanced health science curriculum will lead to a student population of 1000 students or more.”

The new facilities, which will include a satellite facility in East Hampton on Pantigo Road, will cost about $335 million. Stony Book Southampton is expected to launch a capital campaign within the next few months, along with the required architectural bids and renderings of a new design. The new hospital itself is not expected to be operational, so to speak, until around 2023.
