Suffolk County’s Role In The Film Industry
The Suffolk County Historical Society Museum in Riverhead will present “The Silver Screens of Suffolk: Celebrating the History of Film: 1900s to 1960s” at its Grand Staas Gallery through April.
With some of the earliest production studios located on Long Island, Suffolk County played an important role in the early stages of the silent film industry. The exhibit celebrates the history of film, illustrating its early connections to Suffolk County and the area’s local theaters. Showcasing private collections of movie posters, programs, heralds, and theater window cards, the exhibit outlines cinematic history and comprises silent films, Hollywood legends, sci-fi works, and Disney animations.
The historical society will also host “Book & Bottle: African Genealogy” with Sandi Brewster-Walker on February 16 at 1 PM. Attendees can learn about African American family history research accompanied by resources for consolation. Light refreshments and admission to current exhibitions will be included. The event is free for members and $5 for non-members. To RSVP, call 631-727-2881, ext. 100.
