State Of The Town

Riverhead Supervisor Laura Jens-Smith will give the state of the town address at Riverhead Town Hall on April 8 at 6:30 PM.

Riverhead is also seeking applicants to serve on the town’s independent audit committee.

The committee will make sure the town has adequate internal controls over its finances, assure compliance with established policies and procedures, appraise program performance in the conduct of financial compliance and performance audits, and report material findings with recommended corrective actions. Ideal candidates will be residents of Riverhead who hope to improve their community by volunteering their time and energy.

ELIH Pink Aid

The Eastern Long Island Hospital Foundation was awarded the second grant from the non-profit organization Pink Aid to fund the Pink Aid Breast Fit Program.

The program provides free screening and diagnostic mammography for uninsured and underserved women over the age of 40 on eastern Long Island.

ELIH will also host “Spring into Good Health,” a free informational health fair, with the Community Action Southold Town, Town of Southold, and Stony Brook Medicine on April 14 from 1 to 5 PM at the Peconic Lane Recreation Center.

At The Library

The Mattituck-Laurel Library will hold a book discussion a John Irving’s “A Prayer for Owen Meany” on Thursday, March 28, at 6:30 PM.

Toddler time for children ages 13 to 24 months will be held on Fridays, March 29, April 5, and April 12 at 10 AM. The informal playtime is free, but registration is required.

The library will host an eight-week session of low-impact dance aerobics taught by Laurie Short, starting April 1 at 9 AM. The cost for the entire series is $40. Attendees are asked to bring a mat, a pair of three to five-pound dumbbells, and a water bottle. Register in advance at the circulation desk.

It will also host a cooking demo by Chef Craig and the Block Island Seafood Company on April 1 at 6 PM. Chef Craig will demonstrate how to create “seafood bouillabisque,” a velvety take on a bouillabaisse, and ravioli pomodoro. The demo is $5. Register in advance at the circulation desk.

An AARP Safe Driving Course for drivers 50 and older will be held on April 2 beginning at 9 AM. The course is $20 for AARP members and $25 to non-members by check payable to: AARP. Register in advance at the circulation desk. Call 631-298-4134.

Shelter Island Historical Society

The Shelter Island Historical Society has opened registration for the Time Travelers summer program.

The program, which runs July 29 through August 2, allows children ages six through 12 to explore Shelter Island’s history through music, art, performance, crafts, and games.

The program is $150, but there are scholarships available for Shelter Island students.
