Tuckahoe

Tuckahoe recently had two community guest readers visit students.

Officer D’Ancona of the Southampton Town Police Department read “Officer Buckle and Gloria” to Christina Collins’s third grade class. Jennifer White-Combs, a Tuckahoe School alumni and current member of the Georgia Air National Guard, read “ABC Book of the Military” to students as well. She also spoke about her own career in the Air National Guard.

Hampton Bays

Hampton Bays Middle School inducted 21 seventh and eighth grade students into its newly formed Tri-M Music Honor Society chapter at a ceremony on April 3.

To earn the honor, the students were required to maintain a grade point average of 85 or above in all their classes and a 90 average in all music classes, perform 15 hours of community service, and attend various music-related events throughout the school year.

The honorees were Allison Booth, Isabelle Caine, Patrick Collins, Nicole Desjardins, Raphael Dominguez, Lauren Emiddio, Zoey Engeldrum, April Feliciano, Dylan Foley, Madelyn Helfand, Zachary Himelfarb, Charlie Kolb, Samantha Kraycar, Nellie Nicolova, Rieve Nydegger, Katelyn Pennacchia, Christian Pensa, Michael Poremba, Emily Robinson, Maya Sanabria, and Sofia Solano Cruz.

Westhampton Beach

In recognition of Poem in Your Pocket Day, which is part of National Poetry Month, Westhampton Beach Elementary School students took part in poetry-related activities on April 18. One activity included carrying their favorite poems in peel-and-stick pockets and sharing them with their classmates.

Mattituck-Cutchogue

Mattituck-Cutchogue School District students are now able to use Passport for Good, a web/mobile app, to research and expand their community service activities.

The app, which captures community engagement for students, schools, and community organizations, allows students to create customized portfolios of their activities in school clubs and events and the services they provide doing volunteer work in their community.

Students can create and build upon a nonacademic transcript that tracks their community service engagements and hours of service to fulfill graduation requirements as well as add to college applications and scholarships. Mattituck-Cutchogue is the third school district on Long Island to join Passport for Good.

Riverhead

Riverhead High School hosted a “Young Men on the Rise” event to provide male students with positive male role models on April 18.

During the event, several prominent community members, including Suffolk County Sheriff Errol Toulon Jr.; Luis Vazquez, president of the Long Island Hispanic Chamber of Commerce; Marcial Gallimore, president and CEO of Transformative Educational Development Services; Riverhead High School social worker Antonio Diaz; and Riverhead Middle School teacher Darren Dunn talked to male students from Riverhead Middle School and Pulaski Street Elementary School.
