EH Trails Preservation

The East Hampton Trails Preservation Society will hold trail maintenance hikes on Tuesdays at 9 AM during May. Volunteers can contact Carol at andrews81@optonline.net or 631-725-3367 for more information.

There will also be a “Right of Way Trail Clean-Up Hike” on Saturday, May 4, at 10 AM in Montauk. Meet at the Montauk Library parking lot. Contact Eva Moore at 631-238-5134 or 631-681-4774 on the day of the hike.

Montauk Cleanup

The Concerned Citizens of Montauk will hold the “Great Montauk Cleanup” on Saturday, May 4, from 10 AM to 1 PM.

A dumpster donated by Mickey’s Carting will be located at the CCOM office on Elmwood Avenue. Volunteers can also get buckets, trash bags, and gloves at the office.

Complimentary coffee, cider, and donuts will be served afterward. Rain date: Sunday, May 5.

Horticultural Alliance

The Horticultural Alliance of the Hamptons will hold a roundtable discussion on succulents on Saturday, May 4, from 10 AM to 12 PM at the Bridgehampton Community House.

Michael Longacre, a member of the alliance, will share his experience growing succulents, and Pamela Harwood will moderate. The event is free and open to the public.

The group will also present Jerry Fritz, who will discuss “New and Exciting Perennials,” on Sunday, May 5, at 2 PM, also at the Community House. Fritz will bring a selection of his plants along with copies of his book, “Lessons from Linden Hill,” for sale.

Admission is free for HAH members and $10 for non-members.

Mitzvah Day

The Jewish Center of the Hamptons will hold its 11th annual Mitzvah Day, a day of performing good deeds, on Sunday, May 5, from 9:45 AM to 12 PM in East Hampton.

The day of activism will include preparing the community garden, a clothing drive, a cleanup of Main Beach, and collecting food for the Hamptons Food Pantry. Practitioners of all ages and faiths can participate in the event.

Memoir Workshop

East Hampton Library will present “Your Life Story – Get Started Now!” a memoir-writing workshop with journalist Katy Gurley on Mondays, May 6 and May 13, from 9 to 11:30 AM.

The workshop will focus on memoir structure and writing effective anecdotes. A memoir how-to book will be given to each participant to use in class and take home.

Blood Drive

The Bridgehampton Fire Department will hold a blood drive on Monday, May 6, from 2 to 8 PM at the firehouse on School Street.

Those who wish to donate should bring a donor card or ID and make sure to eat well and drink plenty of fluids beforehand. Donors must be at least 16 years old (with parental permission) to a maximum of 75 years old. Donors must not have obtained new tattoos within the past 12 months.

Interstellar Talk

The Montauk Observatory will host a free public lecture, “Oumuamua: Our First Interstellar Visitor,” with Professor Phil Armitage, at Guild Hall in East Hampton on Wednesday, May 8, at 7 PM.

Armitage, who received his doctorate from Cambridge University, has written more than 100 scientific articles and a textbook on planet formation. His current research focuses on the origin of planets in the solar system and beyond, and on the astrophysics of black holes. His talk will focus on Oumuamua, the first body of interstellar origin that was discovered in October 2017.

The event is free, but seating is limited.

Rogers Memorial Events

Looking ahead, The Rogers Memorial Library in Southampton will offer a jam session for local musicians on May 9 from 7 to 8:30 PM.

Participants should bring their instruments. A Steinway piano and microphones are also available. For details, call Evan Gottschalk at 631-283-0774, ext. 509.

The library will also offer “Document Shredding Day” on May 11 from 10 AM to 12 PM in the library’s parking lot. Patrons can bring personal or household documents, but there is a limit of three boxes or three bags. Business or office records, plastic, wet paper, metal, books, magazines, newspaper, catalogs, cardboard, photographs, film, CDs, and electronics are prohibited.

There are seats remaining for the library-sponsored trip to New York City to see “Kiss Me, Kate” on Wednesday, May 15. The prices are $155 for round-trip Hampton Jitney transportation and front mezzanine seats; $290 for two; or $120 for theater tickets only.

Tick Talk

The Westhampton Free Library, which is currently closed for renovations, will hold its Lunch and Learn series, featuring a talk by Gerald Simons on May 10 at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Westhampton at 12 PM.

Simons, a physician’s assistant who works at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital’s Regional Tick-Borne Disease Resource Center, will speak on the types of diseases that are carried by different species of ticks found on the East End, along with symptoms, diagnosis, treatment options, and prevention.
