It was standing room only aboard the Long Island Railroad’s first Cannonball Express on May 24. Shown here are passengers disembarking at the Montauk train station. Several hours later, a passenger train sideswiped a work train in Speonk, shutting down the Montauk line for about 36 hours. The Montauk line was back in service by Sunday afternoon, in time for the Monday crunch as weekenders returned from the East End to New York City.
