East Hampton

East Hampton High School’s buildOn community team recently worked on a buildOn primary school in the Dhakaniya Village of Nepal.

The students lived with host families and worked side-by-side with them to build a school. BuildOn has built 213 schools in Nepal and over 1400 schools globally.

Southampton

Dual-language fifth graders at Southampton Intermediate School recently took part in a competition that challenged them to read 16 books during March Madness.

Along with this challenge, the students were asked to vote on their favorite books and design a 3D symbol from one of the stories they read. They also took part in a reading celebration, where Kate DiCamillo’s “The Tale of Despereaux” was declared the students’ collective favorite book.

Elementary School students learned a variety of circus tricks during their physical education classes on May 1, when fire juggler Keith Leaf introduced them to balancing, juggling, and plate spinning. The students tried out new skills using feathers, colorful scarves, and flower sticks.

Southampton Intermediate inducted 52 students from seventh and eighth grade into the National Junior Honor Society during a candle-lighting ceremony on April 30. To be eligible for membership, the students were required to have a cumulative average of 92 or better and meet the standards of leadership, service, citizenship, and character.

Bridgehampton

Bridgehampton named sophomore Julian Pesce the Athlete of the Week.

Pesce plays junior varsity tennis, as part of a combined team at East Hampton High School, and has been the team’s No. 1 player all season with a record of 5-3. Pesce was given the award for also showing great leadership and exceptional social skills.

Bridgehampton first-graders also explored what community needs by taking a tour of Bridgehampton. They visited the fire department, had an up-close look at a fire truck, and took a tour of the Community House to familiarize themselves with the characteristics of the community.

Five Bridgehampton High School students attended recently attended Student Day at the Legislature. Jaden Campbell, Olivia Cassone, Julian Cheng, Madeline Grabb, and Elijah White met with a panel of legislators and participated in a mock debate, where they served as both legislators and concerned community members.

Hampton Bays

Hampton Bays Elementary School second graders recently participated in a financial literacy program sponsored by People’s United Bank and the Junior Achievement program. The students learned about the people and businesses that make up a community, how goods and services are produced, and some of the different jobs held by members of the community.

Springs

Springs Union Free School District will host its annual World’s Fair on May 17 in the gymnasium. The event will feature live music, dance performances, karate, and tables featuring foods and crafts from different cultures. Volunteers looking to host a craft table or provide food can contact apond@springsschool.org.

Tuckahoe

Children’s book author Patricia Polacco visited Tuckahoe recently in March.

Three students, Emma Cervone, Olivia Casabianca, and Leonard Estrada, were given the opportunity to interview the author. They learned she came from a family of storytellers and did not start writing until she was 41 years old. The full interview can be seen on the district’s website at http://www.tuckahoecommonsd.com.

Westhampton Beach

In celebration of National Poetry Month, Westhampton Beach Middle School students participated in a blackout poetry contest moderated by librarian Yvonne Perez.

For the contest, students created poems by circling specific words, and redacting others, from pages taken out of torn or damaged library books. Lauren Nathan won first place for Best Overall Poem, and Mia Valenzuela won second place for Best Overall Poem. Hollie McAllister won first place for Best Artistic Poem, and Brooke Donahue received second place for Best Artistic Poem.

Riverhead

Aquebogue Elementary School hosted its annual science fair featuring 85 projects from students in grades K-4 on April 16.

First-place winners — Ryan Shields, Madelyn Rosso, Christopher Brincatt, Galen Kurek, and Ava Seebeck — were granted the opportunity to compete in Brookhaven National Laboratory’s annual Elementary Science Fair Competition on May 4.

The Riverhead Central School District will host a special workshop, “Front Door Information Session,” on May 21 from 5:30 to 7:30 PM at Riverhead High School. During the informational event, which is in collaboration with the New York State Office for People with Developmental Disabilities, participants will be provided with an overview of support and services provided by the OPWDD, including early intervention and support and services beyond high school. Service eligibility will also be discussed.
