East Hampton

The John M. Marshall Elementary School fifth-grade band, under the direction of Jonathan Howe, performed at the Bridgehampton Senior Center and the East Hampton Nutrition Center on June 11.

Debbie Mansir was awarded an honorary lifetime membership in the Tri-M Music Honor Society on June 13 at the annual MAP festival at East Hampton High School for her contributions to musical theater in the school district.

Southampton

Southampton second graders recently visited the Southampton High School’s aquaculture program.

The students toured the 2600-square-foot lab that features a greenhouse and algae culture room. They also learned about the 30 species that call the lab home and how high school students care for the fish and their habitat.

Sag Harbor

Sag Harbor Elementary School’s kindergarten students performed “The Creature Feature” on June 10 for schoolmates, parents, teachers, and the community.

The show focused on bees, turtles, baby chicks, eggs, and other critters the students learned about this year.

Bridgehampton

Three Bridgehampton seniors recently graduated from H.B. Ward Technical Center in Riverhead —Hannah Baker, cosmetology; Janatan Braia, automotive technology; and Kwame Yirenki, audio production.

Bridgehampton eighth grader Jonah Posner scored an evaluation of 99 out of 100 at a recent New York State Music Association festival, at which he performed a vocal solo.

Senior Aziza Elwas recently awarded first place at the Student Annual 12, East Hampton’s LongHouse Reserve juried art exhibition. Elwas’s ceramic sculpture was inspired by a visit to the reserve.

Students in Natalia Nichol’s Introduction to Environmental Science class designed and built an aquaponics system that will be on permanent display at the South Fork Natural History Museum and Nature Center in Bridgehampton. The district collaborated with SoFo on a grant that funded the project, which combines conventional aquaculture with hydroponics.

Tuckahoe

Tuckahoe School inducted recently inducted students into the National Junior Honor Society for demonstrating characteristics such as service, leadership, scholarship, citizenship, and character.

The school inducted seventh graders Katherine-Grace Bodington, Thomas Armandi, Nina Clark, Erick Campohermoso, Dylan Grigo, Adrian Saldana, Anne Hattrick, Emily Bartolon, Julian Misut, and Erion Ruhani.

Westhampton Beach

Westhampton Beach Elementary School held an open house at its greenhouse on June 4.

Students provided information on the greenhouse to parents and community members at several stations, including stations related to composting, planting, and caring for vegetable sprouts.

The students have been learning about gardening from farm educator Renato Stafford, owner of Homegrown Organic Food, since January through a PTA-sponsored program. They grew arugula, broccoli rabe, and spinach microgreens during the winter and are now working on growing tomatoes and other vegetables.

Hampton Bays

Hampton Bays Elementary School STEM teacher Jonathan DellaSperanza and art teacher Debra McDowell recently taught students how to turn old paper into new paper that can be used as an artist’s canvas.

Students are working in the school’s STEM lab to make usable paper through a process that involves shredding recycled paper, soaking the scraps in water to turn it into pulp, and drying. Once the material is set, students will use it in their art classes to paint pictures of their choice. The school has recycled 7159 pounds of paper and 8705 plastic water bottles this year, according to DellaSperanza.

Riverhead

Riverhead High School hosted the annual Scholarship Night for the Class of 2019 on June 6.

More than 85 community and memorial academic scholarships were presented to members of the graduating class. For a full list of scholarship winners, visit the district’s website at www.riverhead.net.

Fifth graders in Jaimie Draskin’s class at Pulaski Street Elementary School had a cookie sale as part of a hands-on economics unit to teach students about the various aspects of business on June 10.

The students worked in teams to create cookie businesses that would yield the most amount of “school cash.” They designed advertisements, assisted their teacher in mixing and measuring ingredients, set price points, and created finance reports.

The Riverhead Elks Lodge honored 10 elementary school students as the winners in its annual Flag Day essay contest during a ceremony at the lodge on June 8.

Each student was presented with a certificate of recognition during a luncheon with family and friends. Dillon Realander, Mae Krieger, and Charles Cocanower won first through third place, respectively in the grades 1-3 category, with Ryan Quick and Luke Stepnoski tied for fourth. Alex Silwak, Casey Hubbard, and Violet Burns won first through third in the grades 4-5 category, and Candace Cadenhead and Logan Levesque tied for fourth.

Montauk

Montauk kindergarten students will go to the Riverhead Aquarium from 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM on Thursday, June 20.

The third grade class will go to ARF on June 20 from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM.

The school will host its field day for fifth to eighth graders on June 21. The first grade class will go to the Long Island Game Farm on June 21 during the school day.

LVIS Scholarships

The East Hampton Ladies Village Improvement Society recently announced the winners of 18 scholarships to graduating high school students.

A total of $146,000 was awarded to the students, who will be attending Duke University, Barnard College, Tufts University, Villanova University, and other colleges.

The honorees were Zane Musnicki, Annelise Mendelman, Tori Schmitt, Lateshia Peters, Malia Guebli, Olivia Barris, Julia Kearney, Ravi MacGurn, Emily Hugo, Naomi Blowe, Cassady Czarnecki, Anna Rafferty, Oona Foulser, Anthony Genovesi, and Alexandra Lenahan.

Madelina Kane won the Jean Schnall Award, Talia Albukrek won the Dudley Roberts Award, and Ashley Rea won the Richard Ryan Award.

Suffolk Federal Scholarships

Suffolk Federal recently awarded a total of $30,000 in college scholarships to six high-school seniors who will be attending Suffolk County Community College.

William Clifford, Amber Leon, Samantha Varone, Nicole Migliano, Gabrielle Cerney, and Jaime Cusmano each received $5000 scholarships. Amber Leon also received an additional $5000 scholarship provided by the LT Michael P. Murphy Memorial Scholarship Foundation, and William Clifford received an additional $5000 as part of the Michael E. Reilly Foundation Memorial Scholarship. Recipients were judged based upon academic, extracurricular, and community activities as well as the quality of written essays.
