Accident On 27 Stalls Morning Commute
The trade parade, already at a snail’s pace every morning, came to a halt on Montauk Highway on Tuesday, July 30, when an SUV and a bus collided on the road, knocking a utility pole down and sending live electric wires flying across the road.
The highway was closed between Deerfield Road and Scuttlehole Road for about three hours as traffic was diverted, causing a major logjam in the area.
Southampton Town Police Sergeant James Cavanagh said another accident occurred in Water Mill about the same time when a senior citizen, apparently disorientated from the detour and downed utility pole, lost control of her vehicle.
Cavanagh said there was no fatalities in either accident: the driver of the SUV was taken to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital.
