Mattituck-Laurel Library

The Mattituck-Laurel Library will have face painting and balloon sculpting for children ages 2 to 5 years old at 10:30 AM and a balloon twisting workshop for children ages 7 and up at 1 PM on Thursday, July 11.

Jack LaCitra will perform songs highlighting the importance of repurposing and recycling at the library’s Family Music Festival on July 12 at 6 PM at Silversmith’s Corner in Southold. Families are encouraged to bring blankets or chairs for comfortable sitting to the free concert.

The library will offer yoga instruction for all levels starting on July 13 at 9 AM. The 8-week session will help attendees gain strength, flexibility, and balance. Attendees should bring a yoga mat or towel. The 8-week session is $70, or $15 per walk-in class.

Chef Craig from the Block Island Seafood Co. will give a class on “Summer Salads Supreme” at the library on July 15 at 6 PM. Salads will include a baked lemon salmon over zucchini noodles and shrimp served over chorizo and corn salad. There is a $5 registration fee.

Children in grades third through sixth can learn how to make rock candy on July 16 at 11:30 AM with the Science Wizard. Registration is required.

The library will offer health insurance counseling from 1:30 to 3 PM on July 16. Representatives from the Suffolk County Office for the Aging will offer individual, confidential, and accurate information and guidance for seniors and other Medicare eligible persons. Call the library to make an appointment.

Brady Rymer will give a free, family-friendly concert at Mitchell Park in Greenport on July 16 at 6 PM. Attendees should bring their own chair or blanket.

There will be a book sale on July 17 from 2:30 to 5 PM in the library’s lower level for reading materials at bargain prices.

Mashomack Preserve Activities

Alan Poole will sign copies of his newly published book “Ospreys: The Revival of a Global Raptor” at the Mashomack Manor House on Friday, July 12, from 7 to 8:30 PM. Space is limited, so an RSVP is required.

Mashomack staff will join forces with the Sylvester Manor Educational Farm as guest naturalists at the Sylvester Manor Open House Community Day on July 13 from 11 AM to 3 PM.

Attendees can learn about the connections about the two iconic Shelter Island properties and how human activity has shaped the flora and fauna of Sylvester Manor.

The preserve will host “Young Naturalists: Osprey Observations” on July 19 from 10:30 AM to 12 PM. Kids ages 4 and up can learn about the fish hawk through hands-on artifacts, a fish-catching exercise, a short talk, and a game.

There will be a Summer Evening Kayak Trip along the coastlines of Mashomack on July 21 from 6:30 to 8:30 PM. Kayakers will visit the Log Cabin Creek aquaculture project and paddle Bass Creek as the sun sets. Admission is $30, or pay what you can, and includes all necessary equipment.

East End Arts Classes

East End Arts will offer classes and workshops for adult throughout the summer.

Monica Ray will teach a Botanical Workshop for drawing shells and exploring the Fibonacci sequence on Monday, July 15, from 2 to 5 PM. Participants are asked to bring a choice of seashells, graphite pencils, vinyl eraser, kneaded-eraser, a sharpener, a variety of colored pencils, and drawing paper. The workshop is $60 for EEA members and $72 for non-members.

Lori Hollander will teach one-day jewelry making workshops for sterling silver earrings or pendants on July 16, July 23, July 30, and August 6. Students will design and create their own sterling silver earrings with fabricating and texturing techniques including hammering, piercing, stamping, and more. Each workshop is $60 for members or $72 for non-members, plus an additional $20 materials fee.

Brianna Balzano will direct a women’s a capella group for women 18 and over on Wednesdays from July 17 through August 28 between 7 and 8 PM. The group will cover music from Renaissance era to contemporary composers during the seven-week summer session. The cost is $140 for members, $168 for non-members.

Bleyer To Talk At County Historical Society

The Suffolk County Historical Society will continue the Book & Bottle series with “Little Known Aspects of Long Island’s Maritime History” with Bill Bleyer on July 18 at 6 PM.

Bleyer, a historian, will offer highlights from his latest book “Long Island and the Sea: A Maritime History,” which is the first complete maritime history of Long Island. Bleyer will talk about the development of submarines and torpedoes, the landing of Pan Am Clippers in Port Washington, and the world’s most innovative whaling captain, among other topics.

The event is free for members and $5 for non-members. Wine and cheese will be included.

Free Skin Cancer Screening

Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital, which has partnered with Mollie Biggane Melanoma Foundation and the Town of Southold, will give free skin cancer screenings at Klipp Beach in Greenport on Saturday, July 20 from noon to 2 PM.

Southold Historical Society Art Show

The Southold Historical Society will present “Ten Squared: On the Waterfront,” a fundraising art exhibit and sale, open on Saturdays and Sundays from July 27 to August 11.

The exhibit and sale, which will benefit the historical society, will feature works of art that are 10” x 10” and will be sold for $100. Artists are invited to submit to this non-juried exhibition. For more information, visit www.southoldhistoricalsociety.org.
