Fourth Of July Parade

The Commission of Veterans Patriotic Events will hold its annual Fourth of July Parade in Southampton starting at the Railroad Plaza at 10 AM.

This year’s grand marshal is William Hattrick Jr., who served as Southampton Village mayor from 1985 to 1989. Judges will be Bill Evans and Sandra Foschi, who is the owner of WLNG Radio, along with Southampton Village Deputy Clerk Eileen Musarra, and Southampton Village Trustee Nancy McGann.

Nominees Sought For Preservation Award

The Village Preservation Society of East Hampton is accepting nominations for the VPS Historic Preservation Award until July 15.

The award is an initiative designed to honor significant preservation, rehabilitation, restoration, or remonstration projects and activities that contribute to the historic character of East Hampton and surrounding communities.

Winners will be honored at the VPS annual meeting on September 28, when Paul Goldberger, a Pulitzer Prize-winning architectural critic, author, and educator, will be the featured speaker.

Backyard BBQ

The Chabad of the Hamptons will host a Backyard BBQ on Sunday, July 7, from 5:30 to 8 PM.

The kosher BBQ will feature an all-you-can-eat buffet.

Tickets bought in advance are $18 for children and $36 for adults, or $22 for children and $45 for adults bought at the door.

Back To The 1960s

The Rogers Memorial Library in Southampton, in conjunction with the Southampton History Museum, will offer a lecture titled “1969: The Year That Pointed the Way” on Monday, July 8, at 5:30 PM. Clive Young, an author and presenter, will explore the year in modern times with the moon landing, Woodstock, distinctive sounds, fashion trends, and more.

The library will also host Leif Cocks, founder of the Orangutan Project and world-renowned orangutan expert, on Tuesday, July 9, at 7 PM to discuss his book “Finding Our Humanity.” Cocks will share his uncommon journey into what the great apes teach us about our own humanity.

Marilyn Carmino will talk about “The King and Queen of Jazz: Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald” at the library on Wednesday, July 10, at 12 PM.

The Friends of the Rogers Memorial Library will present the concert “Songs of the Sixties” on Thursday, July 11, at 6 PM. Jason Liebman on guitar and vocals, Ben Gallina on bass, Matt Kanelos on piano, and vocalist Caroline Purr will offer an hour-long tribute to the songwriters and songs of the 1960s. Reservations are encouraged.

Cranberry Bogs

The South Fork Natural History Museum and the Peconic Land Trust will sponsor “They Called it Red Gold,” a walk and history of the Long Island cranberry industry for adults and teenagers, on Monday, July 8, from 10 to 11:30 AM at the Cranberry Bog Nature Preserve in western Southampton.

The talk, which will be led by naturalist and conservationist John Turner, will focus on Woodhull Bog, which was once the largest cranberry farm on Long Island. Turner will also discuss how cranberry farms were created and what brought their demise, as well as wetland-dependent wildlife and native plants that have colonized this area of the Pine Barrens.

There is a $5 charge for the program, and an RSVP is requested by calling the land trust at 631-283-3195 or going to events@peconiclandtrust.org.

Trails Society Activities

The East Hampton Trails Preservation Society will hold a general membership meeting at 7:30 PM Monday, July 8, at Ashawagh Hall in Springs. Refreshments will be served.

The society will conduct weekly Tuesday morning maintenance hikes throughout July at 8:30 AM. The two-to-four-mile hikes aim to keep the trails clear. No experience is necessary.

It will hold a Northwest Woods/Grace Estate hike on Saturday, July 6, at 9 AM. The three-mile hike will offer views of Barcelona Point, Mashomack Point, and Cedar Point before viewing the remains of the 1860s Kirk’s Place homestead. Hikers will meet at the metal gate entrance D to the Grace Estate Preserve on the west side of Northwest Road.

The society will hold a 1.5-mile Northwest Harbor Walk and a 20-mile bike ride through Amagansett/Napeague back roads on July 13 at 9 AM.

South Fork Nature Programs

The Group for the East End will host a Summer Wade in Scallop Pond in North Sea on Tuesday, July 9, from 10:30 AM to 12 PM. The family-friendly event will have attendees wading with seines and dip nets in search of crabs, fish, and other marine creatures. Attendees are asked to wear water shoes. The program is limited to 15 participants, so reservations are required. There is a suggested donation of $5 per person.

For those who cannot make it to the North Sea event, the group will also host a Summer Wade in Napeague Harbor on July 25 from 10 to 11:30 AM.

Celebrating The Moon Landing

To celebrate the first landing on the moon, the Westhampton Free Library will host a class to make glow-in-the-dark, galaxy-themed T-shirts for kids in fourth through sixth grades on Tuesday, July 9, at 3 PM.

As part of its “Dessert and Discuss” series, Rogers Beach manager Shaun Johnson and head lifeguard James Ridgely will talk about how to read beach conditions and obey safety guidelines on July 11 at 12 PM.

The library will also celebrate the new Ann Slovek Seed Library by hosting a “plant a pizza” party on July 13 at 3:30 PM. Attendees will plant seeds for basil, oregano, and tomatoes that they can take home and grow. The event will also feature a pizza tasting.

The library will also host movies on the Great Lawn on Main Street in Westhampton Beach every Monday at dusk through August 26. The schedule includes “Pitch Perfect” on Monday, July 8, “King Kong” on July 15, “Jurassic Park” on July 22, and “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World” on July 29.

Talk On Nursing Homes

The East Hampton Library will present “How a Nursing Home Works” with author Peter Busacca on Tuesday, July 9, from 5:30 to 7 PM.

Busacca, a licensed nursing home administrator, will talk about each department of a nursing home to show the complexities of what goes on to deliver care to the patient/resident. He also will talk about healthcare for young people considering it as a career or for family members who have a loved one in a nursing home wanting to know more about the process.

ARF Volunteers Meet

The Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons will hold a volunteer orientation meeting on July 12 at 6 PM at the ARF Adoption Center in East Hampton.

Jake Kommer, a volunteer coordinator, will explain ways to help the animals at ARF from socializing the cats and dogs to working at the ARF Thrift & Treasure Shop in Sagaponack. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old.

Historian Ralph Buultjens To Speak

Historian Ralph Buultjens will speak at Temple Adas Israel in Sag Harbor on July 12 at 7:30 PM.

Buultjens, a media commentator who has been featured on BBC, CNN, and ABC, will give a talk on Israel and its neighbors after the election during Shabbat evening services.

A wine and cheese reception will begin at 6:30 PM.
