Week of Hope

The second annual Week of Hope, organized by the Hope for Depression Research Foundation to raise mental health awareness, will launch outside of the Ralph Lauren in Southampton on Thursday, July 25, at noon and run through August 4.

During the week, 200 local businesses will place environmentally safe and re-usable yellow balloons by their doors to symbolize hope and their commitment to raising awareness for depression and mental health.

There will be a Southampton Shop for Hope on August 1 from 4 to 6 PM, with several stores including Ralph Lauren, J. Crew, J. McLaughlin, and Geary Gubbins Sports offering discounts and donating a percentage of sales back to HDRF.

On the final day, August 4, is the fourth annual Race of Hope around Lake Agawam at 8:30 AM, with 100 percent of the proceeds will fund advanced depression research.

Holla 4 Challah

The Chabad of the Hamptons will host “Holla 4 Challah,” a challah baking class for kids ages 2 to 12 years old on Thursday, July 25, from 4:30 to 6 PM.

The baking class, held at the Chabad’s Woods Lane location in East Hampton, will teach kids how to mix, knead, shape, and bake their own challah, which they can take home to their families. A kid-friendly dinner will also be served. The class is $15 per child.

Kids, ages 4 to 17, can also help the chabad make a neighborhood mural with messages of inspiration and friendship in chalk on July 31 from 5 to 6:30 PM. Dinner will also be included. The event is $15 per child. For more information, visit www.jewishhamptons.com.

Hampton Library Events

Director Mirra Bank will be the featured speaker at the next Hamptons Doc Fest co-presentation at the Hampton Library in Bridgehampton on Monday, July 29, at 7 PM.

Bank’s “The Only Real Game” is a documentary that celebrates the magic of baseball for women and girls in a remote and troubled border state in northeast India.

Journalist Alexandra Sifferlin and Dr. Robert Hirten of Mt. Sinai Hospital will discuss Revolutionary Medicine: Phage Therapy, which uses viruses to fight bacterial infections, at the library on August 3 at 1 PM.

Fridays on the Porch

NBC meteorologist Chris Gloninger will give the talk, “The Great New England Hurricane of 1938” as part of the Sag Harbor Historical Society’s Friday on the Porch series on Friday, July 26, at 5 PM at the Annie Cooper Boyd House in Sag Harbor.

Gloninger, a Sag Harbor native and graduate of Pierson High School, will explain how the major hurricane changed the east end from the physical damage, as well as why it was so powerful and rare.

Villa Summer Events

The Villa at Westhampton will host an Antiques Road Show on Tuesday, July 30, from 11:30 AM to 2 PM.

Kathleen Mazza, owner of Island Transitions, will give downsizing tips, and Irwin Natman, owner of Vintage Emporium and a certified appraiser with over 40 years in the antique business, will provide assessments of people’s personal treasures.

Rogers Memorial Library Programs

The Rogers Memorial Library will host “Stranger Things” trivia on Wednesday, July 31, at 5:30 PM.

Wendy Moonan, author of “New York Splendor: The City’s Most Memorable Rooms,” will talk at the library on August 1 at 5:30 PM. Moonan, who has written about architecture for The New York Times and Architectural Digest, will talk bout the city’s most memorable spaces that trace the social history of design between 1970 and 2002. Hometown Hero Honored

The Westhampton Free Library honored Tom Hadlock, a U.S. Army National Guard veteran, during its July Hometown Hero ceremony on July 20 at the Westhampton Beach Fire House.

Hadlock, who was born in Chicago but moved east at a young age, enlisted in the U.S. Army National Guard in 1966 during the Vietnam War after receiving his master’s degree from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

Hadlock, who lives in Westhampton, has been active in the Westhampton Beach Arthur Ellis Hamm Post 834, serving as commander since 2010. He played a major role in establishing the recently dedicated Arma “Ham” Andon Memorial Military Park.

The honoree is married with a daughter and two grandchildren. He is also a trustee on the executive board of the Westhampton Beach Historical Society and serves on the fundraising committees for St. Mark’s Church, the Peconic Bay Medical Center, and East End Hospice. In his spare time, he enjoys playing tennis and poker.

Networking Dinner

The Greater Westhampton Chamber of Commerce and the Riverhead Chamber of Commerce will host a July Networking Dinner at the Westhampton Beach Brewing Co. on Tuesday, July 30, at 6 PM.

The dinner is $20 for chamber members by July 28, and $25 after July 28. For non-members it’s $30 if bought before July 28 and $35 if bought after July 28. For more information, visit www.westhamptonchamber.org.
