Town of East Hampton Secures Dead Humpback Whale
Humpback whales were spotted in at least two different locations off the shoreline of the East End last week, and it seems like one of them didn’t make it back out to sea.
The Town of East Hampton set to towing in the whale carcass late on the morning of July 26, in a joint effort with the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association, and U.S. Coast Guard Station Montauk.
The whale was towed to a secure location along the shore near South Eaton Road, and is expected to be removed tomorrow, and the beach reopened.
The Atlantic Marine Conservation Society will conduct a necropsy examination of the whale.
