Cocktail Blues, Green Bonita Shorebound

Shinnecock Bay/Inlet/Ocean

The amount of action in Shinnecock Bay is excellent. The problem is, short fluke is making up a lot of it. All the usual baits including squid, spearing, and gulp are working. Robins and lots of cocktail bluefish make up the rest of the action. Cocktail blues are following huge amounts of bait, and taking tins and jigs. A few striped bass have been hanging around Ponquogue Bridge and the Shinnecock Inlet. Drifted live baits are the best option.

Out in the ocean on the Shinnecock reef and local wrecks, the sea bass are plentiful. The problem again is the large amount of short fish. Work hard, put in your time and you will be rewarded. Clams, squid, and spearing all work well for sea bass. Fishing for fluke outside the canal is tough — lots of shorts with a few keepers. We weighed in a 13.3-pound fluke on Sunday, caught in the ocean outside of Shinnecock Bay by one of our East End Bait & Tackle customers, Mike.

Peconic

There’s still lots of porgies throughout the bay. Cocktail blues have also made an appearance at most of the small inlets, and are chasing bait around the bay.

Shorebound

The Shinnecock Inlet has seen a good amount of cocktail blues taking tins. The green bonita are around as well, and a few fluke, too. The Ponquogue Bridge has fluke, blues, bass, and porgies. Over at the Shinnecock Canal, the porgies are at the north end and snappers are throughout. Some blowfish are still around, as well as a few kingfish.
