Hospital Ribbon Cutting

The Stony Brook Medicine Healthcare System had a ribbon cutting ceremony to commemorate the joining of Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital into the Stony Brook healthcare system on July 23.

SBELIH is a clinical campus and training site for Stony Brook Medicine, which will help increase the number of physicians, specialists, allied health professionals, and nurses on the East End. More than 100 attendees gathered at the ceremony.

Andy Binkowski of the Cross Island Ferry and the Wronowski family presented the Eastern Long Island Hospital Foundation with a $5000 check to benefit the hospital’s emergency medicine department on August 1.

North Fork residents and SBELIH employees took part in the annual Cross Island Ferry’s benefit cruise on July 13, of which the proceeds were donated to the hospital. For more information, visit www.elih.stonybrookmedicine.edu.

Mattituck-Laurel Library

Patricia DelGiorno will present a free talk on international journalist Martha Gellhorn and fellow female war correspondents during the 1940s on Thursday, August 15, at 6 PM.

Families can celebrate the “End of Summer” with Dinoman Space on Friday August 16, at 11 AM, when children and parents can learn about the eight classical planets. The free program will be followed by the Friends of the Library annual hot dog picnic at 12 PM.

Chef Rob will teach a “Summer Time is Tea Time” cooking demo on August 16 at 6 PM, during which attendees can learn how to create a roast turkey, gouda, cranberry, and apple tea sandwich, a shrimp and crab with chili and lime tea sandwich, and a lemon strawberry iced tea. Registration is required and the program is $5 per person.

Southold historian Amy Folk will discuss the motives for founding Southold Town and describe the town’s earliest history on Monday, August 19, at 6:30 PM. Folk will tell the history of the Puritans who sailed from their colony in New Haven, CT to establish Southold in 1640. The event is free.

The Mattituck-Laurel Library will also host the Friends of the Library meeting on Tuesday, August 20 at 9:30 AM. It is free and open to the public.

The Suffolk County Office for the Aging will give free health insurance counseling to seniors and other Medicare eligible persons on August 20 from 1:30 to 3 PM. Call the circulation desk for an appointment: 631-298-4134.

There will also be a Friends of the Library book sale on Wednesday, August 21, from 2:30 to 5 PM.

Slavery In Southold Exhibition

The Southold Historical Society will host an opening reception for its exhibition “Slavery in Southold” on Friday, August 16, at 5 PM.

The exhibit, which will take a close look at the difficult but important period of local history, is housed in the Thomas Moore House on the museum complex. Samuel Landon, who built the home, is shown by records to have owned five slaves. The exhibition will examine the lives of people who were enslaved in Southold Town.

The museum is open Saturdays and Sundays from 1 to 4 PM through September 22. There is a suggested admission of $5 per adult and $10 per family. For more information, visit www.southoldhistoricalsociety.org.
