Tuckahoe Graduate Honored

Emma Cervone, an eighth-grade graduate of Tuckahoe Common School District in Southampton, was one of more than 30 students who received medals of honor at the Suffolk County Legislature’s Distinguished Youth Award ceremony on July 17.

The award promotes and recognizes achievement, initiative, and volunteer service. As a recipient of the gold award, the highest level of achievement in the program, Cervone worked with an advisor and local officials to complete goals in volunteer service, personal development, and physical fitness challenges, as well as an exploration of Suffolk County Parks. Her work totaled more than 400 hours of service over the course of one year.

Lecture & Luncheon

David Netto will speak on “New Life in Old Houses: Architecture and Desire in East Hampton” at the East Hampton Historical Society’s Lecture & Luncheon at the Maidstone Club on Thursday, August 8, at 11:30 AM.

Netto, an author and designer of interiors and furniture, is the contributing design editor at Town & Country magazine. His talk will look at patrician history, modern takes, and his own design work.

South Fork Nature Events

The Group for the East End will have a summer wade in East Hampton’s Three Mile Harbor on Thursday, August 8, from 10 to 11:30 AM. Families can discover the diversity of life as they search for crabs, fish, and other marine animals with seines and dip nets. Attendees are asked to wear water shoes. Reservations are required, and there is a suggested donation of $5 per person.

Pye-Eyed In Sag Harbor

The Sag Harbor Historical Society will host “Fridays on the Porch” this week with a “The History of Pyes,” presented by the Reverend Karen Campbell of Christ Episcopal Church. The event, which starts on Friday, August 9, at 5 PM, offers a hands-on experience, and each participant will leave with a small pie crust or tartlet to bake at home. Rogers Memorial Library

Michelle Beebee will teach a “Move and Restore” yoga class at the Rogers Memorial Library in Southampton on Friday, August 9, beginning at 10:15 AM.

The session will focus on gentle movement, restorative poses, reiki, aromatherapy, breath awareness, and meditation. Advance registration and non-refundable payment are required.

The library will screen “Itzhak,” a documentary by Alison Chernik on the life and career of the violinist Itzhak Perlman, on Monday, August 12, at 3 PM.

With the Southampton History Museum, the library will present “More Tales from the High Seas” on Monday, August 12, at 5:30 PM. Captain Pat Mundus, daughter of shark hunter Frank Mundus, will discuss the boats she’s explored in her travels.

Reference librarian Steven Alcalde will host “Classic Movie Trivia” on Tuesday, August 13, at 6:30 PM.

Sundials At SOFO

The South Fork Natural History Museum will host “Sunlight & Shadow — Building Your Own Sundial” for families and children age six years and up on Saturday, August 10, at 2:30 PM. William Francis Taylor of the Montauk Observatory will teach attendees how to create these simple clocks, as well as how to best design dials suited to their own properties and gardens. Film Discussion

The Unitarian Universalist Congregation of the South Fork in Bridgehampton will screen the documentary film “13th” and host a film discussion on Sunday, August 11, at 2 PM.

The documentary explores how the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution abolished slavery, but justifies the use of forced labor as long as the laborer is a convict, and makes the case that the inclusion of this loophole is only one of the justifications for the continuing domination of people of color. The UU Meetinghouse will offer a qigong class on August 11 at 12 PM, which aims to enhance balance, posture, and health.

Opossums And Raccoons

As part of the Friends of the Long Pond Greenbelt “Sundays at Two” series, Dell Cullum will talk on encounters with opossums and raccoons at the Long Pond Greenbelt Nature Center on Sunday, August 11, at 2 PM.

Cullum is the owner of Hampton Wildlife Removal & Rescue in East Hampton, a humane, no-kill trapping service. In his talk, he’ll discuss opossums and raccoons, which are the East End’s most common nocturnal critters, what makes them unique, the benefits they offer the environment, and how to live with the animals whose habitats are shrinking. Free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

SH Dems Summer Party

The Southampton Town Democratic Committee will host the 13th annual Summer Party at 24 East Harbor Drive in North Haven on Sunday, August 11, from 4 to 7 PM.

The summer party will provide an opportunity to meet the Democratic candidates. There will be live music, food, and drinks. Judge Andrea Schiavoni and Councilman Tommy John Schiavoni will host the event, which will feature special guests and appearances by Suffolk County Democratic Committee Chair Rich Schaffer, New York Assemblyman Fred Thiele, and more.

Immigration Panel

The Hamptons Institute will have a panel on “Latino Immigration Issues on the East End and Beyond” on Monday, August 12, at 7 PM at Guild Hall in East Hampton.

Produced by Tracy Marshall and Sheraton Kalouria, the panel will discuss the multilayered issues related to Latino immigration. Panelists will give individual stories and explore how community awareness, outreach, and activism is the key to positive change. Minerva Perez, the Sag Harbor Person of the Year and executive director of Organización Latino-Americana of Eastern Long Island will join actor Carlo Albán and Carlos Sandoval, a director and producer, on the panel.
