RISE Main Street Market Food Pantry

RISE Life Service’s food pantry on Riverhead’s Main Street was recently awarded a grant in the amount of $2500 from the Charlotte Cheatham Hunger Relief Fund.

The Charlotte Cheatham Hunger Relief Fund, created in remembrance of Charlotte Cheatham, provides grants for food pantries, soup kitchens, and other groups on Long Island that address day-to-day nutritional requirements of people in need.

The food pantry, which also employs individuals through a work program, is open every Wednesday from 10 AM to 2 PM. For more information, visit www.riselifeservices.org.

Healthy Lunch & Learn Seminar

A certified dietitian will lead a free educational talk on Food Safety Basics on Wednesday, September 4, at Peconic Bay Medical Center’s Conference Room A&B on the Riverhead hospital’s second floor. Join from noon to 1 PM. Future topics include Plant-Based Eating (October 2), Handling Holiday Stress (November 6), and Food and Mental Health (December 4). Mattituck-Laurel Library

The Mattituck-Laurel Library will host a senior café and conversation on Thursday, September 5, at 11 AM, where seniors can meet for conversation, tea, coffee, and snacks.

The library will screen “The Command,” which follows the 2000 K-141 Kursk Submarine disaster, on Friday, September 6, at 1:30 PM.

There will be an AARP Safe Driving Course for motor vehicle operators age 50 and older on Saturday, September 7, from 9 AM to 4 PM. The program is $20 for AARP members and $25 for non-members.

An eight-week yoga session for all levels will begin on Saturday, September 7, at 9 AM. The eight-week session is $70 or $15 per walk-in. Participants must bring their own yoga mat or towel.

Group For The East End

The North Fork Group for the East End will host “In Search of Crabs, Fish, Mollusks, and More: Estuary Wade Part II” in Orient State Park on Saturday, September 7, from 10 AM to 12 PM.

Participants can join in the late summer search for small creatures of the estuary, which will be closely observed before being gently released to their aquatic homes. Participants should wear water shoes.

There also will be a Great Pond Habitat Restoration Project in Southold on Sunday, September 8, from 8 to 11 AM.

The Great Pond, one of the few freshwater ponds on the North Fork, has become inundated with invasive Common Reed, which has resulted in diminished natural habitat for wildlife and native plants. Old Steeple Benefit

The Old Steeple Community Church in Riverhead is having its third annual scholarship benefit on Sunday, September 8, at 4 PM.

There will be live music by Joe Hampton & Friends, followed by refreshments. All the proceeds will go toward the scholarship fund. Admission is $20 per person.

Peconic Land Trust

The 13th Annual North Fork Foodie Tour will take place at the Agricultural Center at Charnews Farm in Southold on Sunday, September 8, from 10 AM to 4 PM.

Organized by the North Fork Reform Synagogue, attendees can meet local food and beverage producers in the North Fork. The self-guided tour offers 20 different locations, including the Trust’s Ag Center, local farms, vineyards, and food producers for tours, cooking demonstrations, talks, and tastings.

Mobile School Pantry To Open

To ensure that local families in need are well nourished, the Riverhead Central School District will partner again with Long Island Cares to distribute free food and other items on a monthly basis at its five elementary schools on Monday, September 9, and Friday, September 13.

On September 9, the pantry will be at the Roanoke Elementary School from 5 to 6 PM, at the Phillips Avenue Elementary School from 6:15 to 7 PM, and at the Pulaski Street Elementary School from 7 to 8:15 PM. It will then be at the Aquebogue Elementary School on September 13 from 5 to 5:45 PM, followed by the Riley Avenue Elementary School from 6:15 to 7 PM.

Old Town Arts & Crafts Guild

The Old Town Arts & Crafts Guild in Cutchogue will host a charcoal drawing class on “Feather, Fur, or Scales” throughout the fall.

The classes will be held on September 10, September 17, September 24, and October 1 from 1:30 to 3:30 PM. Lee Harned will teach the course.

The guild will also host a workshop on “Printmaking Without a Press” on Sundays, September 22 through October 27, from 2 to 4 PM.

Watercolor Class

The Southold Historical Society will host a “Harvest Hues” watercolor class with Melissa Hyatt on Thursday, September 19, from 6 to 8 PM at the Reichart Family Barn.

Students will create a still life of pumpkins and fall goods. Painters of all levels are welcome to attend. The class tuition is $40, which includes all materials.

The Suffolk County Department of Health Services will be conducting a Diabetes Prevention Program series starting on Friday, September 20, at 3 PM at the Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead.

Maritime Festival

The East End Seaport museum will host the 30th Annual East End Maritime Festival on Saturday, September 21, and Sunday, September 22.
