Southold Animal Shelter Lends A Paw

When COVID-19 made its way to the East End, North Fork Animal Welfare League knew that it would have its paws full. The organization asked the community to come forward and foster an animal, so that its staff could be available to those who might be in need.

“The outpouring of support that we have gotten from the community for this was great,” said North Fork Animal Welfare League Executive Director Gillian Wood. “And now we’re getting all these fabulous pictures and videos, and we just get such incredible information. Even if the dog doesn’t stay in this home, now we know exactly what to tell people on how the dog is going to behave in their forever homes.”

With almost all of the dogs in foster homes, the not-for-profit group can focus on supporting community members and their pets.

“We want to be available to assist people who can leave their animals at home,” Wood said. “We can help them care for their animals at home.”

She said this can happen even if they become hospitalized, adding North Fork Animal Welfare League can make food deliveries, supply food for people who can’t afford to feed their pets, and make volunteer vet trips.

“We really want it out there that we are here to help as much as we can,” Woods said. “If anybody has any kind of issues with their animals right now, don’t hesitate to call us because we will figure something out.”
