Five Ducklings Saved
A mother duck orchestrated the proceedings, but left it to the professionals to handle a precarious situation. At about 1:15 PM on May 25, Southampton Town police answered a call in Riverside that five ducks were down.
They indeed found the ducks — ducklings, to be exact — stuck in a storm drain on Route 24. Personnel from the Riverhead Fire Department, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, and wildlife rescue raced to the scene. Soon, the little ones were extracted — one at a time, in a delicate operation that took an hour — and were returned to mom, who stood by intently throughout the ordeal.
Yes, the incident happened not far the historic Big Duck landmark in Flanders, but no, there is no correlation.
