Cops Investigating Thefts From Cars In Bridgehampton, Sag Harbor
A rash of thefts from cars occurred in the Bridgehampton area over the weekend, Southampton Town police said on Monday.
The department issued a community alert about its investigation after numerous reports of at least one person rifling through vehicles. “Over the past few days, area residents from Bridgehampton have reported property from within their vehicles stolen during the overnight hours,” the alert said.
In Sag Harbor Village, police received 30 reports that cars had been rifled through over the weekend, though only five people reported items were actually stolen.
Several social media posts indicate the thefts outside of the village may have occurred in the area around Sagg Road in both Bridgehampton and Sag Harbor.
Police are reminding residents to take extra precautions when leaving valued property in a parked car, especially overnight.
Residents are being told to lock their car doors and set their alarms. It is best if cars are parked near motion detectors and/or video surveillance, police said. Park cars in a locked garage, if possible, they added. Officers recommend people remove all valuables from sight.
If property is stolen, report it immediately to police, the alert said. If anyone has had their vehicles tampered with or has video surveillance that could help police in its investigation, they are being asked to contact Southampton Town police at 631-728-3400.
Town police arrested a Mastic Beach man back on May 22 with thefts from parked vehicles in Hampton Bays.
