North Fork Weekend Food Trip
I could not think of a better time to visit the North Fork. With all of the great food and drink selections from Calverton to Orient Point, I curated a food-focused guide for exploring the North Fork this summer season. This guide is perfect for a weekend or day trip across the fork while exploring new take-out and outdoor dining options, as well as new restaurants. Hint: one new spot in particular is a Halal spot customers can’t stop raving about!
Morning On The North Fork
Your first stop should be Star Confectionery in Riverhead. I have been dining there for over 20 years. The food and service are always consistent. For breakfast, I love the spinach and feta omelet and Star’s famous French toast. If you are visiting later in the morning or for lunch, my favorite is the classic tuna melt. I always order mine on rye bread with a side of potato salad. Another terrific breakfast spot is Jeni’s Main Street Bistro in Southold for the breakfast risotto with two poached eggs, and for the cannoli-stuffed French toast. For something new, try the breakfast Reuben with two eggs any style for $11.
Lunch Hour
Craving pizza? Head to aMano in Mattituck, 1943 Pizza Bar in Greenport, or Cucina 25 in Riverhead for some of the best pizza around, according to North Fork locals. 1943 Pizza Bar is known for its thin-crust, wood fired pizza with rotating specials each week. If you love Greek food, visit Hellenic Snack Bar & Restaurant in East Marion. The mouthwatering gyros are irresistible, and they pair perfectly with Hellenic’s famous lemonade. For tacos, nachos, quesadillas, and everything in between, Lucharitos in Greenport and Little Lucharitos in Aquebogue have what you are looking for.
For some seriously satisfying seafood options, head to Braun Seafood in Cutchogue. Its New England clam chowder is one for the books. A fun choice is the fried calamari and shrimp basket. Lastly, for a top-rated halal spot that just opened in Riverhead, visit Shah’s Halal Food. We love its platters like the kofta kebab over rice with the side order of hot wings.
Snack Time
Main Road Biscuit Co. in Jamesport is a spot I always recommend. New to the menu is a cooler picnic for four. It includes lobster rolls, sweet potato chips, sea salt chips, a bottle of local wine, and more.
Any opportunity I have, I always love stopping at North Fork Roasting Co in Southold. There is always something new popping up on the menu from homemade lemonades and quiche Lorraine to matcha lattes and gooey cinnamon rolls. Of course, the coffee beverages are always 10 stars across the board, hot or iced!
A Cuppa
If you have been dreaming about afternoon tea as much as I have, one of your top spots must be Special Effects Salon and Tea in Greenport. It offers afternoon tea boxes, French macarons, lavender shortbreads, and more. Dream-worthy macaron flavors include lavender honey, orange blossom, and passion fruit. Free delivery is available across the North Fork (including Shelter Island) and farther west. It also offers a ‘Healthy Afternoon Tea’ that includes a lavender egg salad with sesame and flax crackers, hummus crudité, a coconut oatmeal raisin cookie, and more.
Dinner At Sunset
Noah’s in Greenport is now offering outdoor dining. The lobster is a staple dish on the North Fork. Other dining spots to know in Greenport include Claudio’s Waterfront and The Halyard Restaurant. At Claudio’s, have the snow crab legs and its famous baked clams. The Halyard is currently offering outdoor dining on its waterfront deck and private beach by reservation only.
Heading out on your boat to watch the sunset? Grab The Village Cheese Shop’s Monger platter paired with a bottle of wine recommended by the in-house sommelier.
A Sweet Ending
Stop in at the North Fork Doughnut Co. in Mattituck for a half dozen doughnuts to go. Our favorite is the classic glaze. For those a little more adventurous, go for the Samoa! For ice cream, one of the most popular stops is Mattituck’s Magic Fountain for any ice cream creation you can imagine. For added convenience, you can order online and pick up at the window. If you are celebrating a special occasion, Magic Fountain creates one-of-a-kind ice cream cakes. For pie lovers, stop by 1760 Homestead Farm in Riverhead. How about a Pecan Brownie pie for the road?
