Bagels for Bridgehampton Child Care Center
Goldberg’s Famous Bagels and East End Cares have joined forces with a campaign called “Bagels for BHCCRC.”
Bagels from local Goldberg’s shops that would have otherwise been discarded at closing time are now being used to help feed over 450 individuals per week at the food pantry at Bridgehampton Child Care and Recreational Center, located on the Bridgehampton-Sag Harbor Turnpike.
Leonore Weitzman of East Hampton brought the idea to Goldberg’s co-owner Paul Wayne who she said was immediately on board.
“We are happy to bring some joy into people’s homes,” says co-owner Marc Goldberg, Wayne’s cousin.
Volunteers from East End Cares along with Weitzman and friends of the Conservative Synagogue of the Hamptons are picking up leftover bagels from the East Hampton and Sag Harbor shops and delivering them to the pantry.
“The bagels each week from Goldberg’s – what a huge difference it makes. It’s just phenomenal,” says Gloria Cannon, a supervisor for BHCCRC’s food pantry. “We get enough fresh bagels to feed everyone – and the volunteers who bring the deliveries are so delightful. What a wonderful collaborative effort to help our community. We are so very thankful for the generosity of Goldberg’s Bagels and the volunteers who are helping us.”
Prior to the COVID-19 outbreak in March, the Center’s food pantry was feeding 60 individuals a month, now that number is over seven times higher. Bagels are picked up twice a week in East Hampton and three times per week in Sag Harbor. The effort will soon expand to include Goldberg’s in Montauk and Napeague.
“This is what volunteerism and East End Cares is all about – everyone working together to make a difference,” said Melissa Berman, a founder of East End Cares. “A lot of what we do encompasses projects that our volunteers come up with, and then connecting local businesses to the wonderful organizations offering direct assistance. We take care of each other . . . kind of like one big extended East End family.”
