East Hampton Village beaches are closed for swimming Friday following a shark sighting on Thursday.
Becky Molinaro Hansen, the village administrator, said the lifeguard-protected beaches are not currently open for swimming out of precaution.
The waters were cleared of swimmers after a lifeguard spotted a shark in a school of bunker fish off of Georgica Beach on Thursday around 1 p.m. The shark was estimated to be about 8 feet long and was heading east. The lifeguard lost sight of the shark about half-way to Main Beach.
Friday is not the worst day for the beach to be closed. It is mostly cloudy and there is a 50% chance of showers, according to the National Weather Service.
