Police Continue Montauk Crackdown
The East Hampton Town police continued their concerted effort to ensure businesses that serve alcohol are in compliance with both the special rules related to COVID-19, as well as the State Liquor Authority.
East Hampton Town Supervisor Peter Van Scoyoc has promised “firm and decisive action” against businesses that violate Governor Cuomo’s public health orders.
“I am pleased to see businesses open and serving patrons while maintaining the safety protocols that are so important to prevent further spread of COVID-19,” Supervisor Van Scoyoc said. “Continued cooperation by all of our business owners will not only protect public health but will help us avoid further business shutdowns, and allow our economy to remain open.”
Teaming with the SLA, police visited at least 14 establishments between July 8 and 9. All were found to be in compliance. On July 8, the main focus was on the dock area. Starting at 7:30 in the evening, police visited the Dock, Liar’s Saloon, the Crow’s Nest, West Lake Fish House and Gosman’s.
The next day, police went over to Surfside Inn, Grey Lady, Memory Motel, Salivar’s, Muse, Navy Beach, Shagwong, the Munch Box, and the Point Bar and Grill.
No violations were observed at the Crow’s Nest, Grey Lady, Swallow, Memory Motel, the Point, and TT’s.
The previous weekend, three establishments and either their owners or managers were cited for alleged violations. One of those establishments, Ruschmeyer’s, was written up again, this time for playing amplified music outdoors after 9 p.m., and for the use of “sparkler-style devices.” However, the inspectors found that COVID-related safety restrictions were being adhered to.
Police also found that the guidelines were being followed at Best Pizza on the Napeague stretch, though inspectors noted “minimal violations” the SLA inspection there, the town said.
Throughout the weekend, police received 304 calls, including 32 noise complaints stemming from residential properties and two from commercial properties. Of the 32 noise complaints made against residential properties, two were at 151 Second House Road in Montauk, and came within 24 hours of each other. The property is immediately adjacent to Ruschmeyer’s.
Police also received seven complaints about compliance with COVID-19 safety rules from the public.
