Wellness Wednesday: Virtual Races Coming Up
From 5K runs to swim challenges, many annual fitness outings and fundraisers have had to go virtual this summer due to COVID-19. Here are a few coming up.
Ellen’s Run
This year marks the 25th anniversary of Ellen’s Run, a race to beat breast cancer hosted by the Ellen Hermanson Foundation. This year, rather than gathering in Southampton Village, participants are asked to chart their own course. Those who sign up can run or walk 3.1 miles anytime, anywhere between August 16 and August 31.
Registrants will also receive a free commemorative t-shirt, and can share their race by hashtagging #EllensRun25 or #EllensRun25Survivor. Top performers and fundraisers will be announced. The cost is $35.
Support helps The Ellen Hermanson Foundation provide access to breast cancer screenings and free support services for patients and families. No patient is turned away from the Ellen Hermanson Breast Center at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital for lack of insurance or inability to pay.

Hope for Depression Research
Hope for Depression Research Foundation’s Virtual 5K Race of Hope will take the place of its annual 5K race that has been held in Southampton since 2015. This year, all runners and walkers who sign up will choose their own race route, whether it’s their street, beach or treadmill.
The virtual race will feature a live broadcast event on Sunday, August 2, at 8:10 a.m. for those walkers and runners who want to race at the exact same time. There will be messages of hope from race participants and a Grand Marshal welcome message all before the virtual race starts at 8:30 a.m. Race ambassadors will contribute to a live race day broadcast, so supporters can virtually cheer them on as they complete the race.
The cost to register is $35. The first 1,000 to sign up will receive a commemorative hat, jacket, runner’s bib and a four-inch 2020 Race of Hope spinner medal. One hundred percent of the funds raised will support research to transform the way depression is viewed, diagnosed, treated and prevented.
