Head-on Collision in Montauk Monday Night
Two vehicles collided in front of the Montauk Community Church on Montauk Highway Monday evening, sending three people to the hospital and closing a portion of the highway.
The crash happened around 8 p.m.
East Hampton Town police and the Montauk Fire Department responded. One ambulance transported two patients to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, while a second ambulance took the third patient. An East Hampton Town police officer was following the second ambulance to the hospital.
A car was reportedly making a turn out of the church on the highway, which is part of Montauk Main Street, when the collision with the Jeep occurred. The department’s heavy rescue truck was on scene, but it wasn’t clear if firefighters had to use any tools.
Both vehicles sustained substantial damage. Fire police personnel shut down the road between South Essex and South Etna Place while police awaited tow trucks.
It was shaping up to be a busy night for the Montauk Fire Department, which has three ambulances. An ambulance was already out on a call when the crash occurred. After two ambulances had responded to the crash, the department received what was their third call for a person who had passed out near the Surf Club on Surfside Drive. An Amagansett paramedic responded to investigate, but found the purported patient had left the area.
