Sandcastle Contest Goes On Despite COVID-19
Every August beach-goers gather to view and create sculptures in the sand at Atlantic Avenue Beach in Amagansett during the Clamshell Foundation’s annual Sandcastle Contest. This year, due to COVID-19, the event went virtual and the foundation asked participants to send in photos of their creations by Saturday, August 8.
Perhaps not so surprising was that the winner’s entry had a little something to do with the coronavirus. Taking home the first place prize was “We Made the Vaccine” by the Liebowitz family.
The second place prize went to “Sand Turtle” by Robyn and John Wilson.
Third place went to “A Cherry on Top” by the Kahn Family.
The contest is now presented each year in memory of Rossetti Perchik, the foundation founder. All donations ensure the continuation of the Clamshell Foundation’s events as well as benefit people, programs and projects here on the South Fork.
T-shirts were also sold to raise money for the foundation. One hundred percent of all profits raised go back to the East End community to support college scholarships, food banks, and fish seeding programs.
Since March, the Clamshell Foundation and East End Cares have together raised funds for local food pantries.
On Friday, August 7 members of the Clamshell Foundation and East End Cares joined together in front of Citarella’s East Hampton store to celebrate raising a total of $126,000 for the Fund for Food campaign.
The team raised nearly $54,000 in donations received at the Citarella stores in Bridgehampton and East Hampton and $16,000 at the Citarella store in Southampton.
$110,000 will go to the food pantries in East Hampton, Montauk, Springs and Sag Harbor, and $16,000 for Heart of the Hamptons.
