Teen Lifeguard Sprung into Action to Rescue Kitesurfer
A teenage lifeguard came to the rescue of a kite surfer who was floating in the waters off Greenport Friday afternoon.
Southold Town police received a report of a person who was in distress at about 12:30 p.m.
Blake Sommi, 21, of Darien, Connecticut, had been kitesurfing when he went into the water, leaving him floating in the channel between the Sixth Street beach in Greenport Village and Sunset Beach on Shelter Island, police said.
Harry Donavan, a 16-year-old from Greenport, was working as a lifeguard at the Sixth Street beach and realized what was happening. He paddled his rescue board out to Sommi, who was approximately a quarter-mile offshore.
Once he reached Sommi, Donovan assisted Sommi onto his rescue board. A passing boater picked both Sommi and Donovan up and brought them back to shore.
No injuries were reported.
The Greenport Fire Department, along with Southold Town police and the Shelter Island Fire Department’s marine units also responded.
