Funeral Services Set for Flanders Family
The Flanders community is reeling from tragedy this week; George Worthington Jr., a former chief in the Flanders Northampton Volunteer Ambulance Corps, and his wife, Mary, were killed in a motorcycle accident in New Hampshire on Friday. Worthington’s father, George Worthington Sr., died at home in Flanders of what many called a broken heart on Monday morning.
Their family has planned funeral services for next month.
A service will be held for the elder Worthington at St. Isidore Catholic Church in Riverhead on Saturday, October 3 at 9:30 a.m. A service for George Jr. and Mary will be held later that same day at 1 p.m. at Flanders ambulance headquarters, where George Jr. was a member for 32 years. A reception will follow.
Interment will take place at the Flanders Cemetery on Sunday, October 4 at 11 a.m.
Meanwhile, Ronald Worthington, George’s brother, created an online fundraiser to raise money for George and Mary’s only son, Joseph Worthington, his wife, Kristal, and their young family. “We are hoping to help them financially with any unexpected costs that may arise,” Ronald wrote.
“To know George was to love George. His heart was as big the sky,” Ronald wrote of his brother. “He was the person you could always count on anytime, any day. His greatest love was Mary. When they met, it was love at first sight and I witnessed that first hand. Their love for each other was so strong and evident to anyone who knew them. They could have never lived without each other.”
As of Thursday morning, $2,200 of a $10,000 goal had been raised on GoFundMe.com.
