Officers, K-9 Catch Alleged Burglar in Bridgehampton
Police and a K-9 dog tracked down a burglar who gave chase after being discovered inside a Bridgehampton house Wednesday afternoon.
A homeowner returned home to find a man inside her Bridgehampton-Sag Harbor Turnpike residence and used a Life Alert button to notify police at 1:19 p.m.
“The responding patrol officer made contact with the male who jumped from a second story window and then fled on foot,” police said in a press release. A foot pursuit began, during which the officer was injured, though he continued to chase after the alleged burglar.
The officer called for the K-9 unit from Southampton Village police. Officer James Moore and K-9 Topper soon located the man, identified as Oscar Mayen Orrego, a 21-year-old Riverside resident. Orrego was charged with second-degree burglary, a felony, and resisting arrest, a misdemeanor.
Orrego was treated for minor injuries at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital and soon released. He was then taken to Southampton Town police headquarters.
Correction: The defendant’s name was misspelled in a police press release and has since been corrected. Also, police said he was charged with obstruction of governmental administration, but he was not.
