There have been a total of 149,827 COVID-19 tests administered in the county, 4005 additional since yesterday. Of those tested, 25.9 percent tested positive. A total of 38,802 people have tested positive for COVID-19, an increase of 130 since May 22.

As of May 21, a figure that wasn’t previously available, the number of hospitalizations also dropped 16 cases from May 20, down to 409, and the number of those in the intensive care unit dropped 6, to 125. Forty-three people were discharged from the hospital to continue recovery at home.

As of May 22, 374 people were hospitalized, a decrease of 35 from May 21. In the ICU, there were 119 patients, a decrease of 6. There were 17 new admissions and 45 people were discharged.

To date, 1822 Suffolk County residents have died from COVID-19, an increase of 8 since yesterday.

As of May 20, a figure not previously available, 425 people are hospitalized due to COVID-19, a decrease of 28 since May 19. Of those patients, 131 people are in the intensive care units throughout Suffolk, an increase of 2 since May 20. There were 17 new admissions. As for some good news, 58 people were discharged. To date, 1814 Suffolk County residents have died from COVID-19, an increase of 12 since yesterday.

As of 2:30 PM today, 33,225 COVID-19 tests have been administered in Suffolk County. Of those, 43.7 percent tested were confirmed positive for COVID-19

There are 15,561 confirmed cases at this time, up from 13, 487 on April 6. A town-by-town breakdown can be found here.

As of this afternoon, 1517 patients are hospitalized (up 54 from April 6), 506 of those are in the intensive care unit, a decrease of 40 patients from April 6.

In the last 24 hours, 73 COVID-19 patients have been discharged from the hospital.

Governor Andrew Cuomo said deaths remain “a lagging indicator to the number of hospitalizations.”

There were 731 new deaths from April 6 to 7, making it the largest single-day increase in deaths since the pandemic hit New York. It followed four successive days in which casualties ranged from 562 to 630.

Long Island accounts for at least 580 of the overall 5489 deaths.

Suffolk County reported 199 deaths on Monday, up 64, and Nassau County 381, which more than doubled its total — 162 — from a day prior.

Nassau County has seen an additional 1218 positive test results since Sunday, and Suffolk County added 1082.

There have been 2935 deaths due to coronavirus infection confirmed in the state, almost 1000 more than yesterday, April 2, with Nassau County jumping to 138 from the last report, which was 76, and Suffolk at 96, with 12 more people succumbing to COVID-19 since April 2.

Update, Sunday, March 29, 6:17 PM

While Governor Andrew Cuomo said the apex is coming in the next couple of weeks, he brought some brighter news with him to Sunday’s briefing.

“I can’t begin to tell you how we are feeling,” Cuomo said. “But the doubling rate was every two days and now it is doubling over six days, and that is good news.”

He said it’s difficult to pinpoint when the peak will be.

As of March 29, of the 59,913 statewide COVID-19 cases, 8503 were hospitalized and 2037 of those patients were in the intensive care unit.

The governor said President Donald Trump has backed off a suggestion that restrictions be enacted to prevent New Yorkers as well as Connecticut and New Jersey residents, from traveling out of state.

“I don’t even think that is legal,” said Cuomo, who extended the shutdown of nonessential businesses another two weeks.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a travel advisory for those states, and the governor of Florida is suggesting New Yorkers rethink plans of going south.

Cuomo shared feeling about the federal bailout package.

“The federal government handed us a goose egg,” he said. He accused Senator Chuck Schumer and the federal government with “playing politics” with the lives of New Yorkers.

Schumer issued a quick rebuke.

“There is much more to be done in order to vanquish and recover from this horrible virus plaguing our great state and nation, but each day we make new progress, and we continue the collective fight,” he said Sunday. “We won’t stop, and I won’t stop until we are back to bustling.”

On Long Island, the virus was breaking in Woodmere (192 cases), Huntington Station, and several other communities. Nationwide, urban centers are exploding with new cases. Dr. Anthony Fauci, an American physician and immunologist who has served as the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases since 1984, and the head of the Coronavirus Task Force, said he expects between 100,000 to 200,000 fatalities in the country before the pandemic subsides, and “millions of cases.”

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone said Friday there were 40 deaths in Suffolk, including three men who died overnight, one a male in his 30s, among the 5023 cases reported across the county.

Suffolk is now breaking down the number of positive cases by origin wherever possible: 43 in Riverhead, 27 in Cutchogue, 23 in Mattituck, 21 in Southold, 18 in Manorville, 17 in Hampton Bays, 15 in East Hampton and Westhampton, five in East Quogue and Calverton, two in Peconic and Shelter Island Heights, and one in Water Mill, Flanders, and Montauk.

 

Update, Saturday, March 28, 5:15 PM

Today’s East End COVID-19 cases break down like this, according to the Suffolk County Department of Health: Southold — 131, up from 129 on March 27; Southampton — 72, up from 65 on Friday; Riverhead —60, up from 56 on March 27; East Hampton —  20, no change. There is also no change on Shelter Island, which stays at one confirmed case.

Eight more deaths were reported in Suffolk County, including another member of Peconic Landing — a woman in her 90s with underlying issues — bringing the total there up to seven.

Deaths reported on March 28 at 2:30 PM include a male in his 60s with underlying health conditions who died at home. All the others were in mandatory isolation at local hospitals in Suffolk County with underlying health conditions, including a female in her 90s, a male in his 70s, a male in his 50s, a male in his 60s, another female in her 90s, and a male in his 80s.

 

Update, Friday, March 27, 5:03 PM

New Yorkers woke up March 27 to the somber news that the United States has more COVID-19 cases than any other country in the world.

Yet, there was reason for hope statewide and locally. Surgeon General Jerome Adams said in an interview “cases have started to level off in New York.” This came with news of a new outbreak reported in New Orleans.

Adams confirmed data presented by Governor Andrew Cuomo at a press conference Friday morning. Cuomo said the number of cases had doubled every 2.5 days from March 17 through 19 and every three through March 23. Now, he said it is every fourth day.

There are more reported cases in the United States than any other country, even Italy and China. Experts, though, the high number — currently more than 94,000 cases — is attributed to a rapid upswing in tests administered.

Cuomo said his experts feel comfortable enough to predict the apex of the virus will occur in 21 days in New York. He’s stockpiling ventilators and attempting to fill an expected shortage of hospital beds with an eye on that date.

Toward that end, Cuomo asked for four more “temporary” hospitals be erected by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He spoke from the Javitts Center in Manhattan, already equipped to handle coronavirus victims. The four additional locations being considered, on top of the four being constructed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency at Stony Brook University, SUNY Westbury, the Westchester County Center, and Jacob K. Javits Center, are the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal, the Aqueduct Racetrack facility in Queens, CUNY Staten Island, and the New York Expo Center in the Bronx.

“I want to have one in every borough. I want to have one for the Bronx, Queens, Manhattan, Staten Island, Brooklyn,” Cuomo said. “One for Nassau, one for Suffolk, one for Westchester, so everybody knows downstate, which is where the essence of the density is right now, that everyone equally is being helped and is being protected.”

Cuomo said he is “searching all over the globe” to acquire more ventilators. The governor said previously he intends to put two patients on a single ventilator if needed. State experts think as many as 140,000 hospital beds will be needed if and when the apex is reached, Cuomo said.

The Jacob K. Javits Center 1,000-bed temporary hospital was completed March 27, with work on the others ongoing.

“I am proud to be on this mission with all the brave men and women of the National Guard, healthcare workers, and first responders who are truly doing God’s work,” Cuomo said.

Currently, there have been 576,859 novel coronavirus cases diagnosed worldwide, resulting in 26,455 deaths. This is up from 83,388 recorded cases in the country and 1,210 fatalities.

Bellone said of the eight new deaths reported, one was a woman in her 90s, five females in their 80s, a male in his 60s, and a male in his 40s. Cuomo concurred that fatalities skew to the elderly and those that require ventilators.

Update, Thursday, March 26, 5:20 PM

On Thursday, March 26, the Suffolk County Department of Health released the new numbers on confirmed cases and deaths due to COVID-19 through 2:30 PM. There are now 2735 confirmed cases, up 475 from the 2260 cases that were reported 24 hours earlier.

There are now 287 patients hospitalized — up 81 from March 25 — and 103 of those are in the intensive care unit — up 36 from March 25.

Twenty-two deaths in Suffolk County are now directly attributed to COVID-19, and seven were related to the Peconic Landing senior living facility in Greenport.

A breakdown of the cases on the East End show 123 in Southold, 59 in Southampton, 45 in Riverhead, 18 in East Hampton, and one in Shelter Island.

Apparently, a faculty member at the Ross School has contracted COVID-19 and is being treated at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, according to an email from the school.

The Sag Harbor Union Free School District posted on its website: “We are writing to inform you that the district has been notified that more than one member of our school community has​ ​tested positive for COVID-19. While the district has not yet received official notification from the Suffolk County Department of Health confirming these test results, protecting the health and safety of our school community remains our primary concern, and therefore we wanted to inform you at this time.”

A corrections officer whose most recent shift at the county jail in Riverside was on March, 14 also tested positive for COVID-19. The officer, whose name was not released, “had limited contact with the jail’s inmate population,” due to the nature of his assignment, said Sgt. Paul Spinella, a spokesman for the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office.

Suffolk County District Attorney Tim Sini has also tested positive.

Update, Sunday, March 22, 5:24 PM

Suffolk County reports 1034 confirmed cases of COVID-19 — up 123 from the 911 cases that were reported at only 11:30 AM this morning.

On Friday, there were 459 cases reported, but as testing becomes more available, and results come in, the numbers were expected to increase.

These are the latest confirmed cases of coronavirus as of 4 PM on Sunday, according to Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone.

The township breakdown of the 1034 positive cases is as follows, with 89 in the hospital and 28 in ICU.

Three more deaths occurred, bringing the total to 12 in Suffolk County. They include  man in his 60s with underlying health conditions who was in mandatory isolation at a local hospital; a man in his 50s who died upon arrival at a local hospital; and a man in his 80s, who died in his home and was confirmed positive by the Suffolk County Medical Examiner.

As of now, there are no statistics available on those who have recovered from the virus in the county.

 

Update, Friday, March 20, 3:40 PM

Southold, already the scene of an inordinate number of coronavirus cases, now has a cluster of fatalities within the confines of Peconic Landing, an upscale waterfront senior citizen development in Greenport, a village within Southold Town.

On March 10, the facility reported a “per diem” worker had tested positive for COVID-19, and on March 12, reported two more staff members had tested positive. The 144-acre facility, which features luxury condos, some waterfront, as well as assisted living dwellings, houses 400 senior residents.

On Thursday, March 19, via a rather terse announcement came the stunning news: three residents at Peconic Landing were dead, having succumbed to the virus over the course of two days. All three, two women and a man, had underlying medical conditions, the facility said, though COVID-19 was identified as the cause of death.

In addition, 12 other Peconic landing residents have tested positive for the virus, Peconic Landing said. Ten were in stable condition as of this writing, one is in the hospital due to COVID-19 symptoms as of this morning, and one has been on hospice care since prior to diagnosis, Peconic Landing said in the release. All are being monitored closely, the facility said.

“On behalf of the entire Peconic Landing community, we offer our deepest thoughts and condolences to the families and loved ones these members leave behind,” said Carol Hance, chair of Peconic Landing’s board of trustees. “The detection and spread of COVID-19 on our campus has been unprecedented. Our team has acted swiftly, beginning planning for a possible response in February and implementing these enhanced precautions starting March 2. We will continue to implement and enhance all guidelines offered by officials at county, state, and federal levels to secure and provide our members with the best response possible.”

Southold Town has more coronavirus cases than any town in Suffolk, according to County Executive Steve Bellone. As of Thursday afternoon, March 20, the executive reported at least 45 cases in Southold, and on Friday, there were 459 county-wide confirmed cases reported, mostly due to the uptick in testing, and now seven deaths.

“Suffolk has tested 2001 people and the number of positive patients has risen to 459 from 239 yesterday,” stated Brookhaven deputy supervisor Dan Panico. “We had four additional deaths in the last 24 hours, all from Peconic Landing . . . bringing the total to seven,” Panico stated. “As of this morning there are 39 people hospitalized, 11 are in ICU, and five are intubated.”

Another disturbing detail — local pediatricians and other health workers have reported they are running low on face masks and other protective gear, although not at the hospitals.

“There is currently enough personal protective equipment to meet the needs of every staff member coming into contact with a suspected or confirmed COVID-19 patient,” read a statement from Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital.

Assemblyman Fred Thiele issued a release on help for struggling local small businesses. “Small businesses and nonprofits in Suffolk County that have been financially impacted due to the coronavirus (COVID-19), may be eligible to receive up to $2 million in loans,” Thiele shared on his Twitter feed. The number to call is 1-800-659-2955 for more information, or the local Small Business Development Center at 631-632-9070.

Statewide, Governor Andrew Cuomo has announced he will sign an executive order to close all non-essential businesses, as well as banning all non-essential gatherings.

On the national front, the Internal Revenue Service has moved the tax filing date from April 15 to July 15.

 

Update, Friday, March 20, 10 AM

Three people have died of COVID-19 at Peconic Landing, Greenport’s assisted living facility.

In a statement on its website, it states, “As Peconic Landing works to combat the spread of COVID-19 on our campus, we sadly report the deaths of three members in connection with this disease over the past 48 hours.”

The statement continues, “Pending approval for the release of information out of respect for loved ones, we report the following at this time:

• Female, 96 of The Shores for Skilled Nursing, deceased 3/18, received COVID-19 diagnosis 3/19

• Female, 97 of The Shores for Skilled Nursing, deceased 3/19

• Male, 96 of Harbor South for Memory Support, deceased 3/19, passed away in hospital.”

“All three members had underlying medical conditions and two were receiving comfort support at the time of diagnosis.  The three members were residents of the Health Center, where COVID-19 was first detected on campus March 10th in a per-diem employee who had unknowingly been exposed to the virus,” writes Peconic Landing.

Governor Cuomo is now urging all New Yorkers to “stay home.” As of yesterday, there were an additional 87 cases in the county from the day before.

Update, Wednesday, March 18, 2:10 PM.

As of today, Suffolk County reports 152 confirmed cases of coronavirus, up from 97 yesterday. There have been three deaths countywide.

Of those cases, 33 are in Southold town, three in Southampton, two in East Hampton, two in Riverhead, and zero in Shelter Island.

New York State is setting up a mobile testing site at Stony Brook University in the South Parking Lot, and will be by appointment only.

Quarantine is now the routine, and social distancing is a thing, as the latest suggestion from the White House is get-togethers of 10 people or fewer to help keep the coronavirus from spreading.

Better yet, stay home.

Restaurants throughout New York, including the East End, are offering take-out and delivery instead of sit-down service, and galleries, museums, theaters, and libraries are closed, but still the locals are amazed by the influx of city people.

“They were sitting around at tables in the East Hampton Starbucks,” said one observer, who preferred to remain anonymous. “It was crowded, just full of people. And a lot of them were older people who are higher risk. Like they’re thinking, ‘In the Hamptons, we’re safer than in the city.’”

Southampton Town Supervisor Jay Schneiderman confirms that there are two cases of COVID-19 in Southampton, leading to a state of emergency in the town. The emergency order will allow the supervisor to take all necessary actions to protect public health and safety.

Of the cases, Schneiderman said they were “a woman in Hampton Bays and a man in the Southampton area. I have no further information.”

Earlier on Monday, March 16, in a press conference, Governor Andrew Cuomo stated there were 950 cases in New York State; 63 cases in Suffolk County. Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone confirmed on Monday that there were two deaths in Suffolk County from COVID-19 — one in Smithtown and one in Huntington. By Tuesday morning, that number had increased countywide to 74 — and included the deputy county executive, Peter Scully, who tested positive.

In East Hampton, a second case has been identified, but the only information available was that it is a man in his 70s. This is an addition to the woman in her 70s identified several days ago.

On Sunday, March 15, Suffolk County legislators Bridget Fleming and Al Krupski, along with Southold Supervisor Scott Russell, Greenport Village Mayor George Hubbard Jr., and Police Chief Martin Flatley held a coronavirus briefing.

“It’s going to get worse before it gets better,” said Fleming, but added that the officials wanted to assure the public that everything is being done. “We are ramping up the testing,” she said, although that hasn’t happened as of press time.

One of the latest cases reported over the weekend was an employee from the Southold school district. A notice went out Saturday. Superintendent David Gamberg stated, “It has come to my attention earlier this evening that a staff member at Southold has tested positive for COVID-19. We are awaiting direction from the Suffolk County Health Department in terms of next steps as far as a continuing investigation with this case.”

Bellone has closed all schools in the county through March 27, following in the footsteps of his counterpart in Nassau, Laura Curran. New York City schools are closed through April 20.

“There is evidence that the virus is already present in many communities we serve, and our efforts now must be aimed at preventing its spread,” Bellone said in a statement Monday. “As part of our larger social distancing efforts, we believe that closing schools is the right thing to do at this time.”

School faculty will still have access to district buildings for planning and distance learning.

The Suffolk County School Superintendent’s Association is working with state officials to establish student meal programs during the closures, as well as expanding childcare options for students with parents who need to work. Nassau County officials are making similar preparations, according to Curran.

The North Fork is a surprising hot bed. In its first week, 21 Southold Town residents were diagnosed with COVID-19. There are more cases on the North Fork than anywhere else in Suffolk County.

Novel coronavirus has started to appear in the Town of Riverhead with the first confirmed case reported Sunday night. Two town employees are also under mandatory quarantine for possible exposure outside of the town. To further protect its employees, residents and visitors, Riverhead Town offices, including Town Hall and the yard waste facility, will be closed to the public.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, who is spearheading the government’s effort to curtail the virus, agrees Americans need to break existing social habits and “hunker down” more. The restrictions are coming at the speed of light. Entertainment venues that announced they were remaining open just two days ago will be shuttered by tomorrow. Schools and churches are also shuttered, and some hospitals will bar most visitors.

“If you are visitor with a cough and/or temperature, you will be asked to leave,” said literature posted at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital. “All visitors will have to show ID. Even those needing admittance to the emergency room will gain access one at a time.”

All non-essential businesses — including bars, movie theaters, gyms, casinos, and race tracks — were ordered to close in New York, Connecticut, and New Jersey effective at 8 PM Monday until further notice. Restaurants can continue offering takeout and delivery service. Dining in will not be permitted. Essential businesses — such as supermarkets and gasoline stations — can continue to operate. Non-essential travel is “strongly discouraged,” governors of all three states said in a joint press call Monday morning.

The U.S. death toll had climbed to more than 60 over night by March 15, and COVID-19 cases in the U.S. have surpassed 3000.

Italy reported 368 new coronavirus-related deaths on Sunday, an increase of 25 percent.

President Donald Trump said Monday officials are hoping the virus will play itself out by summer.

There are now 97 confirmed cases in Suffolk County, three of whom have died.

Out of the 94 active cases, according to Brookhaven town councilman Dan Panico, 28 are in Southold, two in Southampton, two in Riverhead, and two in East Hampton.

There are currently no cases being reported from Shelter Island.

Southampton Town Supervisor Jay Schneiderman confirms that there are two confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Southampton, leading to a state of emergency in the town.

The emergency order will allow the supervisor to take all necessary actions to protect public health and safety.

Of the cases, Schneiderman said, “A woman in Hampton Bays and a man in the Southampton area. I have no further information.”

The number of confirmed cases in Suffolk County has risen overnight from 49 cases to 63.

“I have also issued a town emergency order today,” Schneiderman said.

Earlier today in a press conference, Governor Cuomo stated there were 950 cases in New York State; 63 cases in Suffolk County. County Executive Steve Bellone confirmed this afternoon that there have been two deaths in Suffolk County from COVID-19 — one in Smithtown and one in Huntington.

One of the latest cases was an employee from the Southold schools.

A notice went out yesterday from the Southold school district that an employee tested positive. Superintendent David Gamberg stated, “It has come to my attention earlier this evening that a staff member at Southold has tested positive for COVID-19.  We are awaiting direction from The Suffolk County Health Department in terms of next steps as far as a continuing investigation with this case. ”

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone has closed all schools in the county through March 27, following in the footsteps of his counterpart in Nassau, Laura Curran. The NYC schools have been closed through April 20.

As of now, there are 19 cases identified in Southold, 14 in Greenport. The Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead is adding up to 20 new beds to its emergency room facility.

There are at least 2816 cases of the novel coronavirus in the United States as of today, according to the state and local governments and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. A total of 58 people have died as of this writing, including three in New York state and two in New Jersey.

Though the number of new cases per day continues to rise, the nation’s top infectious disease expert believes the country acted quickly enough to curtail the scale of a catastrophic pandemic like the one Italy is currently experiencing.

In Italy, the tab is up to 20,000 cases Sunday. Dr. Anthony Fauci, an infectious disease expert, said he was confident “we can prevent ourselves from getting to where Italy is now.”

“We have never faced a virus like this with the potential consequence,” said New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo today.

Cuomo shut down mass gatherings of over 500 people and cut the capacity in half to public places that hold under 500.

An elderly woman succumbed Sunday to the coronavirus in a New York City hospital, becoming the third state death, Cuomo said.

The deceased was identified by Cuomo as a 79-year-old woman with “multiple major underlying issues.” She died early Sunday in an unspecified New York City hospital, Cuomo added though officials would not reveal further information.

Cuomo urged businesses “aggressively consider” work-from-home strategies and voluntary closures.

“Depending on what businesses do on a voluntary basis, we could consider mandatory actions later on,” said Cuomo, though he did not elaborate on how potential forced closures would be enforced.

He did, however, stress the importance of business-as-usual for essential personnel to keep the state humming.

“Should the Congress not show up? Should police not show up?” he asked rhetorically. “We need soldiers to fight the war.”

As of this writing, there are 729 cases of coronavirus in state according the New York State health department with 90 in Nassau County and 49 in Suffolk. New York City has 269 cases.

Cuomo suspended, with the blessing of NYGOP Chairman Nick Langworthy, on the collection of petition signatures for primary battles and reduces the number needed to get on a ballot.

The visitation policy at Peconic Bay Medical Center is being revised until further notice. All visitors who enter our facility will be required to wear a mask. No visitors will be allowed emergency department except for pediatric patients, one adult only and maternity, one partner permitted. The cafeteria is closed.

The East Hampton Food Pantry and its satellite in Amagansett announced new restrictions. Those who need assistance should call 631-324-2300.

The MTA has been informed by the State Department of Health that a Long Island Rail Road employee tested positive for the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). The employee, who was last at work on March 7, is a sheet metal worker who does not work on-board trains or interact directly with customers. The employee is in quarantine receiving appropriate care and “the MTA has disinfected his workplace multiple times and is monitoring the situation closely,” an MTA spokesman said.

In the meantime, the Hamptons have been flooded with second homeowners, with shelves at most of the local food stores and markets running low. However, local store owners aren’t complaining about the unexpected uptick in business. “I’m doing August numbers,” said Jesse Bartel at BookHampton in East Hampton.

Update, Saturday, March 14, 5:25 PM.

New York State has its first COVID-19 death from coronavirus, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced during a phone presser this morning. The victim, he said, was an 82-year old woman who was hospitalized in Manhattan and suffered from emphysema.

The day began with a modest number of new cases reported, giving hope that the spread of the pandemic had somehow leveled off despite historic data that indicated, in Cuomo’s words, “It’s going to get a lot worse before it gets better.” Within an hour, overnight numbers began to roll in and indeed there was a significant increase of reported cases: a total of 524 statewide, up from 421 the evening before, an increase of 21 percent.

In Italy, where the outbreak is considered among the worst in the world, confirmed cases rose from 12,462 to 15,113 overnight, an increase of 21.7 percent. More than 4600 people have died and over 126,000 have been infected globally, according to the World Health Organization. About 68,000 victims have recovered, according to Johns Hopkins University, which is tracking the virus worldwide.

Official agree the number of unreported cases cannot be quantified.

There were 70 reported cases in Nassau County as of noon today, an increase in 20 from yesterday, and 37 in Suffolk, up from 28.

East Hampton Town has one victim, a woman in house quarantine. “The resident is under mandatory quarantine; a woman in late 70s has not had contact with town senior center, programs, or transportation services, lives in private residence. County health department are investigating patient’s movements and contacts,” according to an update from the town.

As a precaution and to avoid community spread of the disease, most town meetings are canceled and business will be conducted remotely, in conjunction with the town emergency preparedness coordinator and the East Hampton Town police chief, announced East Hampton Town Supervisor Peter Van Scoyoc.

“Town-operated facilities and programs, with the exception of the town recycling centers in East Hampton and Montauk, will be closed to the public as of Monday, March 16, 2020. Town staff will report to work for essential business and can continue to accept and process applications for permits and the like, but we ask that submissions be made electronically.”

The Town police department will remain open to the public, Van Scoyoc said. All public hearings of the planning board, zoning board of appeals, and architectural review board are canceled until further notice except in instances where time constraints have been placed on an application through a court or other legal obligation.

The East Hampton Town Senior Center closed as of March 11; individualized services are available.

“Our community has weathered many storms. In times of need we work cooperatively together,” said Van Scoyoc. “Now is a time to do the same. I ask that everyone act responsibly to help stop the spread of the coronavirus.”

All five towns are operation under State of Emergency declarations.

Yesterday President Trump declared a National State of Emergency, banned travel in and out of most of Europe, and added Ireland and the UK to the list today. In France and parts of Spain, all retail businesses including restaurants are ordered to stop operating until further notice.

Spain is second only to Italy in number of coronavirus cases in Europe, and that happened very quickly.

The travel ban does not apply to American citizens to foreigners who live and work here.

Southampton Village Mayor Jesse Warren, village residents, and local businesses have organized a delivery program aimed to assist the elderly, house-bound, or high-risk community.

Should these residents be unable or fearful of venturing into crowds, volunteers will shop for them and deliver packages to their front door.“We want to do everything we can for the community at this time,” said Warren.

A drive-thru coronavirus testing ramp is up and running in New Rochelle and one will be online at Jones Beach shortly. Hundreds more are planned.

New York Senator Charles Schumer said a bill before the U.S. Senate should be approved and signed by the President momentarily.

Schumer said the bill, once it becomes law, can unlock billions of dollars for this state.

“New York is now a national epicenter in the coronavirus fight and the deal we negotiated in the House and must now pass in the Senate will ensure New York has the tools, the dollars and the federal resources to go at the virus with full force,” said Schumer.

Schumer said state-wide dollars related to healthcare funds known as “FMAP,” unemployment benefits and meals for seniors, will be made available immediately.

“This must be passed in the Senate with all due speed so President Trump can sign it,” added Schumer. “These are dollars for New York healthcare, unemployment, meals for homebound seniors, and other critical efforts we will need to maintain the mission.”

As much as a billion dollars will be set aside for people who lose their jobs.

 

Update, Friday, March 13, 5:23 PM.

President Donald Trump declared a National Emergency this afternoon, March 13, and ordered American citizens overseas to come home or face a travel ban.

But he praised the nation’s quick response and said although some of the efforts “have been invisible to the press and people,” the U.S. has been able to “limit” deaths and pointed out most other parts of the world have a significantly higher number of cases. There have been 1800 cases and 42 deaths in the country as of today. Trump also waived interest on all student loans being held by federal banks and authorized the purchase of enough oil to maximize reserves.

For the first time, local consumers, en masse, showed their concerns at the marketplace, flooding stores that sell food and related supplies and purchasing items in bulk. A piece on Page Six described “New York’s elite” flooding the Hamptons.

At CVS, two managers said Cold-eeze and other suppressants and disinfectants were sold out.

At King Kullen in Bridgehampton, there was no rubbing alcohol and related items; disinfectant sprays, soaps, toilet paper, and the like were being gobbled up off the shelves.

At Citarella in East Hampton, the meat counter was virtually barren by 11 AM, the super-premium steaks and chops among the first to go. A mountain of freshly ground beef was being dispensed to waiting buyers in multi-pound blocks. As the meat case was emptied, those on line bought lamb, pork, veal, and virtually anything that remained unsold, some without knowing what kind of meat it was. Price was no object.

“It’s like July,” said one astounded local shopper.

The number of confirmed patients of the recently declared pandemic Coronavirus Covid-19 gained little momentum, though not a single state or local official expressed the hope that warmer weather like we experienced today might retard the growth.

Southold town, where 11 cases are reported, is in virtual shutdown — the total for Suffolk County stands at 28. New York City, Suffolk County, and Nassau County have been declared states of emergency. The five towns on the East End have been declared as well; Riverhead was the last.

Supervisor Yvette Aguiar declared a state of emergency in the Town of Riverhead effective noon today until further notice. Aguiar canceled next week’s town board meeting, as well as all town committee meetings through the end of the month.

County Executive Steve Bellone spoke of other concerns. “The economic impact on some local businesses” place jobs and the businesses themselves in jeopardy. The county’s “business response plan will make up to $2 million in loans available per business to those who fit the criteria,” he said.

The county is taking steps “to protect those on the front lines” by setting up government call centers equipped to quickly respond to hot spots.

Joining in the press conference were CEOs of retailers including Walmart, Target, and CVS, which will set-up drive-thru testing centers in their parking lots, and Google is developing a website that will match those that need tests with a nearby location. But federal health officials stressed only those with symptoms should seek testing and that not everyone that wants to be tested will be accommodated.

“There have been many people exposed and there are going to be many more,” Governor Cuomo said at his mid-day briefing. Cuomo, who banned gatherings of 500 or more people, doubled-down on that, cutting capacities at all venues in half. That move forced the Westhampton Beach Performing Arts center, which was going to try and weather it out, to suspend programming.

County Legislator Bridget Fleming called upon Cuomo to temporarily shutter every school district in the state and copied her request to every school administration in her district. Most already have canceled after-school activities and some are temporarily closed or closing, such as East Hampton and Southold. Cuomo expressed concerns about parents being unable to get to work if their children are home, and for children who are on the free and reduced lunch program and rely on their school lunches as their biggest meal of the day.

All St. Patrick’s Day festivities have been postponed in Montauk (parade, cocktail party, Grand Marshal luncheon and soup sale) and in most East End towns.

The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles encouraged customers to take advantage of the DMV website by completing their transaction online. The website offers more than 60, including options to renew or replace a driver license and/or vehicle registration, obtain a driving record (abstract), change your address, and make a payment.

“Before coming into a DMV office, we recommend all customers visit our website to see if their transaction can be done online or by mail,” said Commissioner Mark J.F. Schroeder. “Using our website is the easiest way to do your business with the DMV; we offer a wide variety of options for the convenience of our customers, and we continue to redesign our website to improve the user experience.”

In addition to various license and registration transactions, customers can settle fines and plead to tickets and handle associated fees online or by mail. Furthermore, the DMV website can be used to sign up as an organ donor, submit a voter registration application, or update voter registration information.

New Yorkers are also reminded that they do not need to visit a DMV office to surrender license plates, they can do it by mail.

In addition, PSEG announced it will not turn off electric to delinquent accounts until further notice.

New Rochelle, the state’s hotbed has been declared a national Containment Zone and is being patrolled by the NYS National Guard.

First case hits East Hampton.

According to a statement by the Town of East Hampton, a woman in her late 70s is under mandatory quarantine and being monitored by the health department, which is conducting an ongoing investigation.

The Suffolk County Health Department confirmed this afternoon that an East Hampton resident is one of 21 Suffolk County residents who have tested positive for the COVID-19 coronavirus. All cases to date in the county appear to have been community spread and not linked to travel.

On Thursday afternoon, officials from East Hampton Town and its villages, along with emergency responders and school officials, urged East Hampton residents to limit their person-to-person contact in an effort to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

Residents have been urged to immediately practice “social distancing,” by doing business remotely, by phone or email rather than in person; undertaking only necessary errands or other tasks, and canceling group meetings or gatherings.

More cases of the coronavirus are expected.

Community members are reminded to practice general health precautions and sanitary measures including frequent hand washing; the use of hand sanitizers with at least 60 percent alcohol; keeping one’s hands away from the face, sneezing into tissues that should be immediately discarded, keeping a distance away from those who are sick, and remaining at home if ill. Frequently touched surfaces such as doorknobs, tables, desks, etc., should be cleaned and disinfected regularly.

East Hampton Town Supervisor Peter Van Scoyoc and other local officials will continue to coordinate with emergency preparedness officials, the office of the Suffolk County Executive, and others as actions are implemented, as necessary, in response to the coronavirus pandemic, and will continue to inform the public of developments and advisories.

 

Update, Thursday, March 12, 6: 50 PM.

The state now has 328 positive coronavirus tests, the most in the country. Of them 95 New York City residents have now tested positive for the virus.

Fourteen percent of the cases — 47 of 328 — are now hospitalized.

Nassau County announced an additional 12 cases, bringing its total to 41. Between Nassau and Suffolk counties, there are 60 confirmed cases of coronavirus on Long Island.

“It’s going to get a lot worse before it gets better,” New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo said.

Locally, Southold has emerged as an unlikely hot spot with eight cases including three workers at Peconic Landing, a retirement community, an employee at Southold Fish market, and one with roots at a Greenport brewery.

New Rochelle, the hardest hit area in the state, has been quarantined off and is being serviced by the National Guard.

Southold schools will close despite the fact no students have tested positive.

“Although the district has not received a positive result of COVID-19 for a student or staff member, we have made the decision to close tomorrow, Friday, March 13 and Monday, March 16. This is out of an abundance of caution and will allow the District to complete a deep, thorough cleaning of the buildings. We will remain in constant contact with the Suffolk County Department of Health,” said Superintendent David Gamberg.

East Hampton is closing the schools on Monday and Tuesday, March 16 and 17. Sag Harbor schools are closed, and the Ross School is closed for the month. Hayground in Bridgehampton is also temporarily closed.

The Hamptons, however, have to had a single positive test as of yet. There are 22 college students being quarantined at Stony Brook Southampton campus, but none have tested positive. A North Fork man is being treated at Southampton Hospital and is, according to County Executive Steve Bellone, recuperating.

State University students are being sent home for the foreseeable future. Cuomo has just banned all gatherings of 500 or more people, which means all Broadway shows are closed until further notice.

The National Basketball Association and the NHL are canceling games and the NCAA basketball tournament is suspended. Most high school basketball playoff games are being canceled.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone declared a state of emergency for the county Thursday as the number of confirmed cases climbed. He said the declaration will “allow county government to more quickly respond to the emergency,” including by purchasing “critical supplies” like hand sanitizer, protective gear, gowns, masks, and moving staff as needed.

The Watermill Center announced to today it will close until the end of March. Guild Hall in East Hampton, released a statement today suspending all programs, including those in the John Drew Theater, the Guild Hall Museum, and its classroom, through March 31.

East Hampton School will cancel SAT tests Saturday.

Shelter Island, Westhampton, and Amagansett libraries are among the many canceling events for the remainder of March.

In a statement released today, the Rogers Memorial Library in Southampton stated, “Currently the library is open for regular operating hours but starting Monday, March 16 through March 31, we will be cancelling programs for all ages.”

Montauk Library will cancel programs and group activities beginning tomorrow.

Upcoming parades are in jeopardy. The Westhampton Beach St. Patrick’s Day parade has been postponed but several more may be in the next day or so. Check with organizers before making plans.

The League of Women Voters forum on Monday, Mar. 16, 7 PM at Bridgehampton Library has been cancelled, due to concerns about spread of coronavirus.

There are now eight confirmed cases of COVID-19 from the Town of Southold, a total of 20 in Sufolk County, which has declared a state of emergency.

Sag Harbor, Southold, and Greenport schools are closed.

Update, Wednesday, March 11, 9:12 PM.

Six cases have been confirmed in Suffolk County now. They include two people from Southold, including the first case in the county, a man in his 40s who is apparently recuperating from COVID-19 at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, according to an announcement by County Executive Steve Bellone.

There is also a woman in her 20s who is under a mandatory quarantine at her Southold home.

The other four are from Brookhaven township; three hospitalized at Stony Brook University Medical Center and one at St. Catherine’s Hospital.

One of the confirmed cases is a part-time employee of Peconic Landing in Greenport; another an employee of the Greenport Harbor Brewing Company.

As of Wednesday night, the Sag Harbor school district has closed until March 22.  The Greenport Union Free School District is closing Thursday and Friday.

Farther afield, all SUNY and CUNY students are being sent home. Many are taking their classes remotely, including community college attendees.

ORIGINAL STORY

From the moment the news came that a possible pandemic was on the horizon, there has been a sense of apprehension hereabouts. After all, sooner or later New York becomes prominent on every itinerary, and then it’s only a short jump to the East End.

The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) festering in Wuhan, China since mid-December has been breaking out worldwide. Its circuitous path has taken it, literally, to our doors over the course of about six weeks — an Independent editor flashed symptoms and was taken to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital after arriving home from Mexico on Friday, March 6. [Editor’s note: She has had no contact with anyone at The Independent.]

Feverish, coughing, wearing a mask, she awaited testing before finally being sent home. Down the hall from where she had been was reportedly Suffolk County’s first confirmed case, a North Fork man who tested positive March 6.

On Sunday night, Ashley John Heather, who runs the Spur, sent members the following message: “Spur Members, Please be aware of the following information. It was reported to us from a credible source that on Friday evening (March 6) a Greenport resident was taken to the ICU at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital. Today, he unfortunately tested positive for Coronavirus (CV).” The Spur provides interactive meeting spaces for fellow entrepreneurs.

Lauren Sheprow, a public information officer for Stony Brook University Hospital, said she could not confirm the information and that the State Department of Health would have to provide an update shortly.

On Monday afternoon, the Town of Southampton confirmed that the patient was at the hospital. “Over the weekend we learned that the first confirmed case of coronavirus was identified and being treated at Southampton Hospital,” stated the release from Town Supervisor Jay Schneiderman’s office.

“Media outlets have reported that the patient being treated originated at Eastern Long Island Hospital and was transferred to Southampton Hospital.  We have received assurances from hospital officials that the individual is, and has been, in isolation in the hospital and all necessary precautions have been taken as part of their plan.  We are hopeful that this individual continues to improve in condition and turns into another survival success story.”

Almost simultaneously, Shoreham-Wading River School District abruptly suspended classes after officials there said the spouse of a faculty member had tested positive. It could not immediately be gleaned if the cases are connected.

Officials expect more cases. According to Heather, he was at an event in Greenport on Thursday morning, along with around 200 other people for the “future of Greenport” conference, organized by Northforker magazine. “The majority of the attendees were over the age of 60 and some must have come in contact with this Greenport guy,” he opined.

The Greenport Harbor Brewery has confirmed that an individual with coronavirus is an employee — as a precaution the North Fork brewery and restaurant is shuttering for about a week.

There are 22 students in quarantine at the Stony Brook Southampton University campus that were recalled from their State University of New York study abroad programs. Officials stressed none of the students have tested positive. Schneiderman was nonetheless annoyed the information about the students wasn’t shared with town officials. “I’m not very happy but there isn’t much I can do about it,” he said.

By noon Monday, there were 142 cases reported in New York, the most in the country.

Governor Andrew Cuomo announced a new policy for New York schools that would require a 24-hour initial school closure if a student tests positive. “After that, we will make an assessment of the situation and the facts and make a determination going forward,” Cuomo said.

“We have a significant number of people now on quarantine,” Cuomo said. “We don’t want to add to the burden we’re creating. But for the business community, it’s in their interest that people stay home and stop the spread.”

Congressman Lee Zeldin said federal officials have taken every precaution to minimize the outbreak in this country. “The coronavirus outbreak is a quickly evolving situation, and now is not the time to play politics. At a time like this, fear can oftentimes outweigh facts, and we are even more susceptible to fear when the facts are hard to come by, such as when many students were recently sent to our district from affected countries. Clear, open, and constant communication is key to effectively combat this outbreak.”

At the start of the coronavirus outbreak, by January 1, coronavirus was spreading across China, Japan, South Korea, and Thailand, according to the World Health Organization. By the third week, the first confirmed case was reported in Washington state in the U.S.

The carnage in China — thousands of cases resulting in hundreds of deaths — forced WHO to issue a “public health emergency of international concern.” The U.S. State Department warned travelers to avoid China and issued worldwide alerts. By January 31, U.S. President Donald Trump ordered certain international travel restrictions.

In South Korea, and then Iran, cases multiplied. On February 28, Italy became the epicenter of the coronavirus surge in Europe.

The number of infections in Europe spiked.

In the United States, cases started popping up rapidly. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned on March 1, “It’s not a matter of if, but when.”

“Ultimately, we expect we will see community spread in this country,” Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of the CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases told reporters.

“It’s not so much a question of if this will happen anymore, but rather more of a question of exactly when this will happen and how many people in this country will have severe illness,” she said.

Bridget LeRoy, The Independent editor alluded to earlier in the article, went to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital after exhibiting symptoms. She said there might be additional cases hereabout that haven’t been reported yet. “At least 20 other people are here with same symptoms as me,” she texted to the office. “I had a chest x-ray and urine tested, but they won’t use COVID-19 testing unless patients are at ‘death’s door.’ Everyone who works here only gets ONE facemask a day so they don’t run out. And a nurse said, ‘Tell people not to come to get tested unless they are having trouble breathing.’ They’ll just take their vitals and send them home.”

Another nurse said, “It’s like Bedlam in here,” referring to the influx of possible coronavirus carriers throughout the day on Monday. The emergency room had every bed filled, but the staff stayed calm and helpful.

LeRoy was eventually released.

The number of known coronavirus cases in the United States continues to increase. As of Monday morning, March 9, at least 545 people have been treated for coronavirus in 34 states and Washington, D.C., according to a New York Times database, and at least 22 patients with the virus have died. The first NYC resident tested positive on March 1. The patient, a 39-year-old Manhattan woman, had just returned from Iran when she started having mild respiratory symptoms. Cuomo said the woman and her husband are health care workers and they both isolated themselves at home. Her husband tested negative for the virus.

The best advice for those who think they may have the virus but are not yet having trouble breathing is the same for the common cold or flu — rest at home, wash your hands, drink fluids, and stay tuned.
